Mr. Clayton Paul Goodwin,86, of Como, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2019, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford.

Mr. Goodwin was born on June 14, 1933, in Oxford, MS to the late Ethel Mae Lewallen Goodwin and Clayton Eugene Goodwin. He was a hard worker all of his life who retired from Sardis Luggage, Roper Luggage and Mississippi Materials.

He is fondly remembered for his love of and collection of caps of which he had many.

He proudly served his country with the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Goodwin was a member of Como United Methodist Church.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 61 years, Willie Jo Goodwin of Como; one sister, Eloise Bradley of Crenshaw; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his son, Stephen Paul Goodwin and his parents.

Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 9, 2019, at  the Sardis Chapel of Ray-Nowell Funeral Home with Rev. Milton Whatley officiating. Interment was at McGehee’s Chapel Cemetery near Como.

Memorial contributions may be made to McGehee’s Chapel Cemetery Fund, 7661 Parks Place Road, Como, MS 38619. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Ray-Nowell Funeral Home.

 

Mrs. Janey Sue Hankins. age 56, passed away Monday evening, Sept. 2, 2019 at her residence in Crowder.

Funeral service were held Friday, Sept. 6,  at Trinity Lighthouse Church in Crowder. Interment followed at Crowder Cemetery. Kimbro Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Janey was born on June 1, 1963, to the late Dow and Ruby Fletcher in Washburn, Mo. She attended Southwest School District in Washburn. She was united in holy matrimony to Reverend Michael James Hankins on July 26, 1980, in Washburn,  where they made their first home.

This union was blessed with three children. In 1989, Michael and Janey Hankins settled in Crowder,  where Reverend Michael became assistant pastor and later became pastor of Trinity Lighthouse Church.

Mrs. Janey taught kindergarten for many years at the Lighthouse Christian Academy and then became supervisor over the school where she served many years until she became ill in 2016. Janey touched many lives during her service as pastor’s wife at the Trinity Lighthouse Church. She leaves behind her faithful legacy to her children, grandchildren and many in the community.

Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her survived family: her husband, Reverend Michael Hankins, two daughters Takisha Jones (Daniel) of Crowder; Rebecca Young (Jeff) of Tutwiler; one son, Reverend Joshua Hankins (Kaylin) of Crowder; six grandchildren Addyson Jones, Gavyn Jones, Gabriella Hankins, Ruby Kate Hankins, Madelyn Hankins and Charlee-Anne Young; six sisters and five brothers. A host of brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, nieces, nephews and her mother-in-law, Mrs. Bonnie Hankins of Crowder.

She was preceded in death along with her parents, Dow Edward and Ruby Lorene (Day) Fletcher, two sisters Janice Fletcher and Elaine Fletcher, one brother Jimmy Fletcher, her Father-in-law, Reverend Gary Hankins and one nephew Seth Gentry.

 

Rev. Robert Alvin “Bob” Hickey, age 83, passed away Friday, Sep. 6, 2019, at Baptist Desoto Hospital in Southaven.

Funeral services were Monday, Sept. 9, at First Baptist Church in Batesville with burial at Barbee Cemetery in Lula under the direction of Wells Funeral Home.

Bob was born April 5, 1936, in Sardis, MS to the late Glover Chester and Mattie Lillian Arnold Hickey. He honorably served his country in the U.S. Army and was discharged after achieving the rank of Master Sergeant. Bob went on to serve the State of Mississippi as a Mississippi State Trooper. He began his career as a state trooper in 1963.

He was promoted to a Public Affairs Officer in 1976. He served as Chaplain of Troop E. He won the National Uniformed Officers’ Award in 1982. He won the Safer Rural Mississippi Award 5 years consecutively. He retired in 1986 as a Staff Sgt. after 23 years service. Following his career as a state trooper, Bob worked for Mississippi Farm Bureau as a safety specialist for 13 years.

All throughout his working life, the Lord was slowly leading his heart to His ministry. After being called and licensed into the ministry, Bob served for 10 years as pastor for Walnut Baptist Church and from there, he spent the next 23 years as pastor of Union Baptist Church in Sardis.

Bob and his wife Alice, enjoyed Sunday afternoon drives and spending time with their family, friends and grandchildren. Traveling to the mountains and just taking road trips were very special to them. He always enjoyed pot luck dinners with his church family, but most importantly, spending time with the Lord and in His Word, is where Bob found his peace.

Bob’s loving and caring memory will be cherished most by his wife of 63 years, Alice Richardson Hickey of Senatobia; daughter, Kimberly Hickey Boatwright and husband, Steven, of Millington, Tenn.; sister, Ruth Ann Harmon of Gallatin, Tenn.;; three grandchildren, Skipper Alexander Boatwright, Steven Zachary Boatwright, Sara Annalea Boatwright; two great-grandchildren, Soren Alexander Boatwright and Atticus Charles Boatwright.

Along with his parents, Bob was preceded in death by a brother, Chester Lee Hickey, and a son, Richard Allen “Skipper” Hickey.

 

Donald Eugene Jubb, LCDR, United States Navy, Retired, 91, of Sardis, died Friday, Sept. 6, 2019, at his home in Sardis.

Commander Jubb was born on May 21, 1928 in Yankeetown, FL to The Late Alvina Krueger Jubb and George F. Jubb. He earned his Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Vanderbilt University in 1951 where he was a part of Sigma Nu and president of the Anchor and Chain.

He continued his education at Ole Miss where he earned his Master of Business Administration in 1957. Mr. Jubb served as a deacon at Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church in Coronado, CA and at Sardis Presbyterian Church in Sardis.

He was a former president of the Sardis Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. Commander Jubb proudly served his country in the United States Navy where he earned 12 personal decorations including a bronze star with 2 combat V’s before retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Commander in 1971.

Left behind to cherish his memory is his loving family which includes his wife of 64 years, Carolyn Jubb of Sardis; three daughters, Sally Jubb of New Orleans, Dr. Jennifer Jubb – Young of Florence, Ala.,, and Leslie Jubb Laudo of Dallas; a special granddaughter, Elizabeth Tucker of Seattle; three other grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and one brother.

A memorial service celebrating Commander Jubb’s life was held Sunday, Sept. 8, at Sardis United Methodist Church with Rev. David Laird officiating. Interment was at Rose Hill Cemetery with military honors.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sardis United Methodist Church or to a veteran’s group of the donor’s choice.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Ray-Nowell Funeral Home.

 

Shirley Jean Russell,  83, died Friday, Sept. 6, 2019, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford.

Funeral services were Sunday, Sept. 8,  in the Marti Willingham Memorial Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with burial at Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Clarksdale.

She was born Aug. 2, 1936, in Drew to the late James Arvel and Irene Guest Fulgham. She was a retired secretary for Boyle, Lanham & Morgan Insurance Agency in Clarksdale.

 

Linda Dorr “Joyce” Sanders, 83, died Sept. 5, 2019, at Providence Assisted Living in Batesville.

Funeral services were Monday, Sept. 9, in the Martin Willingham Memorial Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with  Rev. Bob Self officiating.

She was born March 23, 1936, in Sardis to the late Luther Audley Dorr and Lillian C. Johns Dorr.  She was the office manager for Batesville Clinic before retirement. She was a member of Batesville First Baptist Church.

 

Edna Scott, 96, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2019, at Pine Meadows Healthcare in Bolivar, Tenn.

Funeral arrangements  will be posted by Wells Funeral Home when finalized.

 

Monty Mobley Thomas, 63, passed away Sept. 4, 2019, at the Bolivar Medical Center in Cleveland.

He was born Aug. 14, 1956, to Lent E. Thomas Jr. of Batesville and the late Mary Ruth Mobley Thomas. He was a member of First Baptist Church.

Graveside services were held Friday, Sept. 6, at Curtis Union Church Cemetery with Dr. Tommy Snyder officiating.

He graduated from West Panola in 1975. In his younger day, he enjoyed riding the rodeo circuit and earned wages as an equine farrier.

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lent Thomas Jr.; sisters Maribeth (Billy) Haire of Batesville, Carol Thomas of Memphis; brothers Tripp (Beth) Thomas, Jim (Amy) Thomas, and John (Amy) Thomas, all of Batesville.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by a brother, Bill Thomas.

Tommy Wren, 68, of Memphis, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2019,at his residence.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 7,at Liberty Hill C.M.E. Church in Como. Burial was at the church cemetery.
