Stephen J. Carter, 89, died Sunday, June 2, 2019, at West Point Community Living Center in West Point.
Funeral services were Thursday (June 6) in the Martin Willingham Memorial Chapel of Wells Funeral Home. Interment was at Union Cemetery near Sardis.
He was born May 25, 1930, in Holmes County to the late Solomon Stephens and Dessie Mae Self Carter. He was the retired owner of Panola Lawn and Garden in Sardis.
Mr. Carter honorably served his country in the U.S. Army where he achieved the rank of Corporal. In appreciation of his service to our country, military honors will be provided by the U.S. Army.
Calvin Cox, 56, died June 3, 2019 at his residence in Batesville.
Funeral services will be held June 11 at 2 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary Chapel with burial at Spring Hill Asa Church cemetery in Courtland. Visitation is June 10 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Cooley’s.
He was born Jan. 13, 1963, to Joseph Cox and Jessie Mae Norwood. He was a factory worker at Technicolor.
Funeral services for Robert McGhee, 80, will be Saturday, June 8, at 11 a.m. at Zion Hill M.B. Church in Coldwater with Pastor Jerome Blackburn officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery under the direction of Cooley’s Mortuary.
He died May 31, 2019, at the Sardis Nursing Home.
He was born Dec. 24, 1939, in Senatobia to J.T. McGhee and Luellia Armstrong. He was a farmer and a member of Zion Hill M.B. Church.
Visitation is today (Friday) from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Cooley’s.
Funeral services for Shirley Oliver, 69, will be held Saturday, June 8, at St. Peter’s M.B. Church in Sardis at 2 p.m. She died Tuesday, June 4, 2019, at DeSoto Baptist Hospital in Southaven.
Visitation will be today (Friday) from 4 to 6 p.m. at Henderson Funeral Home. Burial will follow at St. Peter’s Church cemetery.
She was born Aug. 1, 1949, to the late Will Oliver and Maggie Sanders Oliver.
Betty J. Russell, 81, died Tuesday, June 4, 2019, at her home near Batesville. She was the wife of Billy W. Russell.
Funeral services Betty will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 9, in the Martin Willingham Memorial Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with visitation beginning at 1 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will follow at Black Jack Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Reverend Eddie Rayburn will officiate.
Funeral services for James McArthur Scott IV, 35, will be held Saturday, June 8, at 2:30 p.m. at Mt. Olive M.B. Church with Pastor C.J. Battle officiating. Burial will follow at New Bethlehem Church cemetery under the direction of Cooley’s Mortuary.
He died May 30, 2019, in a car accident.
He was born July 17, 1983, to James McArthur Scott III and Loretta Kuykendoll of Sardis. He was a mechanic and a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church.
Visitation is today (Friday) from 4 to 6 p.m. at St. Paul’s.
William Eugene (Bill) Still of Sardis passed away peacefully early Sunday morning, June 2, 2019, in Sandy Springs, Ga., at the age of 84. He was the son of the late Rayford Eugene (Gene) Still and Robbie Goodnight Still, born on October 10, 1934 in the Cold Springs community near Sardis.
He was married to his wife of 60 years, Mary Jane Weaver Still, on June 23, 1956, and had three sons. He spent his life as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend to many, successful businessman, and a teller of great tales. He was proud to have grown up in the Blackjack and Cold Springs communities and to have graduated from Sardis High School.
Mr. Still was also a proud graduate of Mississippi State University and upon graduation in 1956, served in the United States Air Force as a navigator/bombardier on B-47’s, achieving the rank of Captain. He went on to successful careers in manufacturing and insurance in Batesville until his retirement.
He was also an avid fisherman, hunter, and gardener throughout his life, and was an active member in the church community, most recently a member of First Baptist Church in Sandy Springs, Ga.
He is survived by his sister, Mrs. Joyce Ales of Sardis; his three sons and daughters-in-law, John Rayford (Ray) and Tammy Greenspan Still of Harvest, Ala., William Steven (Steve) and Joy Harbor Still of Norris, Tenn., and Samuel Philip (Sam) and Barbara Still of Atlanta, GA; and his six grandchildren, Elisabeth, Emily, Rebekah, Micah, Liam and Patrick Still.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane Weaver Still, of Columbus.
Funeral services for Mr. Still will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 8, in the Martin Willingham Memorial Chapel of Wells Funeral Home in Batesville.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today (Friday) at Wells Funeral Home. Interment will follow the service Saturday at Cold Springs Cemetery near Sardis.
