The Como Mayor and Board of Aldermen met Tuesday, May 14, to deal with ongoing problems.
The property at the corner of Highway 51 and Highway 310 was up for discussion. The owner had been notified by letter, but neither the owner nor the renter showed up to the board meeting.
Mr. Wallace got permission to build a storage building on his 218 Elder Frank Ward Street property, the same size as the one he just built It will be set 15 feet back from the road.
While he was there, the board asked him to warn his tenant that her dog is using the church ground as a bathroom and she is not picking it up. Wallace took exception to this request, thinking that it’s the police’s job.
He was told that the tenant says Chief Earl Burdette is picking on her so Mayor Everett Hill said this is the next closest thing.
“If I send the police, I don’t want to hear from you that he is picking on her,” Hill warned.
Fire Chief Aaron Coleman said they answered five EMR calls, five motor vehicle calls, four fires and three false alarms in April.
The firemen were finishing up their Most Butt sales for May 25.
Police Report
Assistant Police Chief Faye Pettis reported there were two car break-ins on the East end of the track by a 17-year-old. The juvenile is now wearing ankle bracelets and cannot come out of the house for a year, Pettis said.
Pettis reported that Burdette, who was sick and could not attend the meeting, had caught two dogs. One was so tough that it tore the leash borrowed from the veterinarian. Pettis asked the board to reimburse the vet for the leash. She did not have the cost of the leash at the meeting.
Citizen Complaint
John Mulhall approached the board and complained of drainage back up at the corner of Coleman and Compress. He said leaves and grass are impeding the drainage process and backing up the whole system.
Then he asked to build a studio-type building behind his house at 604 Coleman St., Como. It will not be for commercial use.
Claims Docket
The board approved the claims docket of $59,830.77.
Other business
The city accepted the bid of 3T Tree Service to remove the trees behind the Catfish place at a cost of $3,300.
Mayor Hill will be the voting delegate at the upcoming Mississippi Municipal League Conference (MML) and John Walton is the alternate.
