Oxford attorney will headline NAACP program

Former U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of North Mississippi Calvin “Buck” Buchanan will be the keynote speaker for the Panola County NAACP branch’s Black History Program on Feb. 24 at Mt. Zion Church in Sardis.

Buchanan was an assistant attorney in the D.A.’s office beginning in 1990, and was appointed to lead the office by President Bill Clinton in 1996. While serving as a federal attorney, he prosecuted a wide variety of criminal matters, including drug and narcotic violations and firearms charges. He received both his B.A. and J.D. from the University of Mississippi.

Prior to joining the United States Attorney’s Office he served in the United States Army for over seven years. As an Army Judge Advocate, he served as a prosecutor, defense counsel, and general civil counsel.

Buchanan, born in Okolona, actively participates in community activities in Oxford.  He serves as a mentor for special students in the Oxford School System and has served on the Board of Directors of the Rape Crisis Services of Northwest Mississippi and the Oxford-Lafayette County ElderCare Coalition. He is a member of the Mississippi Bar and the Magnolia Bar Association, where he is on the Awards and Scholarship Committee. He is a past member of the William C. Keady American Inns of Court.

Buchanan served as a part-time instructor of Business Law, and as a member of the Law Alumni Board of Directors at the University of Mississippi. Presently, he is a member of the Alumni Association’s Minority Alumni Advisory Council.

The public is invited to attend the program and hear Buchanan’s speech.
