  • ● Two Jackson Men escaped with minor injuries Tuesday when their truck crashes on I-55. Firemen from the Batesville and Courtland Volunteer Fire Departments quickly controlled the blaze the destroyed the truck and threatened grass and trees on the interstate highway.
  • ● After dropping a game to Clarksdale Lee this past Monday night to end the regular season, North Delta’s Green Waves heads into sub-division action tomorrow night at Phillips College.

  • ● The Pontotoc County Circuit Court jury has not yet reached a sentence on Tuesday after earlier this week finding Cecilia A. “Cookie” Williamson guilty of capital murder in the death of her husband, Batesville gravel dealer James Buford Williamson.
  • ● The West Panola basketball boys received a win Friday night after a close game with Gray Academy. This win now moves their record to a 9-14 season. Phillip Vaughan leads the squad with a total of 22 points, Joey Tigner and David Vaughters each had 13, Cliff Griffen sinks 12, and Paul Savage drops six.

  • ● Judge Leon Hannaford sets a hearing on the proposed expansion of the City of Batesville corporate city limits on March 7.
  • ● Three candidates authorize the announcement of their intention to run for office this week. Incumbent Beat 3 supervisor M. N. “Nick” Aldridge will run for re-election. Mack Benson, South Panola County farmer, will also run for supervisor of beat 3. James L. Travis, incumbent beat 5 supervisor, is also a candidate for reelection.

  • ● Congressman Jamie Whitten is the featured speaker at the annual meeting of the North Mississippi Recreation Development Association to be held at the Gulf Trail Lodge in Sardis.
  • ● Strong winds early Monday morning destroy the trailer home of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Cook in the Curtis community.
  • ● Bob Floyd, recently of Nashville, Tenn., is the new minister at Batesville Church of Christ.

  • ● Friday proves to be an eventful day in Batesville. Shortly after the overturning of a transport truck on the east access lane to Interstate 55, a freight car derails on the side track on the Batesville City Square, blocking one lane of traffic at the main ICRR crossing. No injuries are reported in the latter accident.
  • ● Poloron Products announces the promotion of William E. (Bill) Still to Production Manager of the Batesville plant.
  • ● A team from North Panola High School in Sardis appear in “Quiz ‘Em On the Air” on WMC-TV Channel 5, Saturday, February 1st. The team competes against M.C. Williams High School of Germantown. Faculty coach for the team will be Martha Lynn Woodruff.

  • ● The South Panola Tigerettes defeat the Lambert girls Monday night at Lambert 77 to 38. Becky Barnett scores 34 points, Brenda Miles scores 20 points and Sandra Bolton scored 18 points. The Tigerettes begin play Wednesday in the Delta Valley Conference Tournament at Cleveland as the number one seeded team.
