As of Thursday morning four elected officials in Panola County had filed qualifying papers to be certified as candidates for election this year. More filings are expected today and in the coming weeks. Candidates have until March 1 to file.
Panola County Sheriff Dennis Darby was one of the first ones to submit his paperwork as he filed early Wednesday morning, soon after the courthouse opened for the new year.
Since then, Circuit Clerk Melissa Meek-Phelps has filed qualifying papers as has Constable Raye Hawkins and Tax Assessor/Collector David Garner.
Supervisors Vernice Avant, Cole Flint, John Thomas, and James Birge each verified they intend to seek re-election and will be filing papers soon. Supervisor Donald Phelps said he has not yet decided whether he will run for his supervisor’s post again, and has also not ruled out seeking a different office. “It will probably be two weeks before I make up my mind for sure,” he said.
Chancery Clerk Jim Pitcock said he also intends to seek re-election.
Coroner Gracie Grant-Gulledge said she will have her papers submitted by today and will campaign for the position again.
Other potential candidates are expected to make filing decisions soon.
