Pope splits with Batesville

Pope and Batesville Junior High concluded their two-game season series Thursday at
Batesville with both teams earning wins.
In the girls contest, Destiny Smith’s eight first half points guided Batesville to a 19-9 win over Pope. Kamiyha Griffin added six points, all in the third quarter, as the Lady Tigers broke open a 8-5 lead at halftime.
Janiyah Wright and Princess Lofton garnered two points each with Tamara Washington scoring one point.
Channell Butler paced Pope with three points while America Ford, Paris Morris and Ladaja Chapman all registered two points.
In the boys tilt, Julius Pope’s basket with 29 seconds lifted the Bulldogs to a 18-13 win over Batesville. Mitch Mitchell sealed the game with a pair of free throws with 17 seconds remaining. The victory marked Pope’s second win over Batesville this season.
Pope led the Bulldogs with seven points while Mitchell added four. Nicholas Strong chipped in with a three pointer with Jadarrious Bobo and Travis Blackburn each providing two points each.
Mar’Karrius Mckinney paced Batesville with five points with Tristen Flowers and Michael Johnson added three points. Kellen Norwood finished with two points.
Pope ends its season Thursday at home against Charleston beginning at 5 p.m. Batesville played North Panola last night and will host Senatobia Thursday at 5 p.m with a pair of 7th and 8th grade games.
