Como Board honors selfless Chapman

Brenda Chapman received a plant from the Como Police Department Assistant Chief Fay Pettis and Board of Alderman for going beyond the call of duty. She let over 200 children into her home during a bomb threat to use the bathroom and never complained. In the back are Mayor Everette Hill and Police Chief Earl Burdette.

Como City Board had a relatively short meeting Tuesday night before a room full of citizens.
The highlight was the recognition of Brenda Chapman by Police Chief Earl Burdette and the City Board. During the North Panola Jr. High School bomb threats, Chapman opened her house at Burdette’s request to let 200 to 300 children use her bathroom. The children were forbidden to go in or near the school while it was being searched for almost two and a half hours.
Chapman was surprised with a flower arrangement presented by Assistant Police Chief Fay Pettis.
“I didn’t mind at all,” Chapman said.
In other business, John Varadi received permission to add more storage buildings to the back of his existing JV Systems Buildings.
Mark Lipscomb asked for clarification on two letters he received from the city. He has a consignment business operating on his existing property and was told he needed a privilege license for his consignment business.
The fire department had a light month, recording 17 calls.
Alderman Teresa Dishmon called for parents to resist the efforts of the North Panola School Board to send all the third through fifth grade to Green Hill and bring all the kindergarten through second grade to Como Elementary next year.
