Cleanup crews: lunch is on the Cub Scouts

By Rupert Howell
Saturday is Keep Panola Beautiful Day and Panola County is observing by holding the second clean-up Panola Day this year asking citizens to participate by picking up and bagging trash along roadsides and bringing it to the Batesville Courthouse to count and be disposed.
Teams and individuals can compete for a grand prize of $150 and participant prizes that includes gas cards and restaurant certificates. A hotdog lunch and drinks will be provided for participants across the Square at the Civitan Building.

Local Cubs will benefit both from Saturday’s Fall Clean-Up and Civitan Radio Day as First Security Bank’s Tracy Goforth presents a check to use toward groceries for lunch at the Civitan Building on Panola just off the Downtown Square this Saturday. Cubs are selling lunch tickets but those participating in the county clean up will get lunch free. Onlookers are invited to the Civitan Building with Civitans broadcasting live on Undefined Radio their annual auction which is the club’s largest fundraiser. Across the Square at the Batesville Courthouse, groups, clubs, churches and individuals will be bringing in trash from county roads with many earning gifts and prizes to supplement their efforts.
Some of the Cubs of whom you can purchase lunch tickets are: (from left) Jacob Roberson, Bailey McKee, Walker Sayle, Tyler McCullar, Tanner Locke, Cooper Renfrow, Carter O’Conner, Jaden Webster, Jackson Neth and Eavan Unruh.
In the rear are Cubmaster Dr. Justin Unruh and FSB representative Goforth.

And it’s not too late for you or your group to adopt a road for clean up according to Panola County Solid Waste Department Head Jennifer Jackson who encourages clubs, churches, business, industry and individuals to join in the clean up.
In case of severe rain or weather, the event will be postponed according to Jackson who said scattered showers in the area would not cancel the event. If weather is questionable she advises participants to call 934-7992 for confirmation.
Meanwhile roads are still available for adoption by calling Solid Waste at 563-6225. Bags, gloves and reflective vests will be provided and can be picked up at the Batesville Courthouse or will be delivered to a convenient location.
