Child OK after accident

By John Howell
A three-year-old child struck by a vehicle on Sardis’ Dewberry Street Sunday afternoon is “bruised up” and apparently a little shaken, but otherwise okay, Sardis Police Chief Chris Martin said.
“The kid ran out in front of the guy,” Martin said, about 3:15 p.m. The driver stopped and acknowledged himself to the child’s mother, who knew him, according to the police chief. Martin said that initial reports that the driver left the scene were not accurate.
Police first became aware of the accident when an officer stopped a speeding motorist on East Lee Street. Family members were attempting to rush the young accident victim for treatment. The officer called MedStat ambulance whose EMTs then contacted an air ambulance “just for precaution,” Martin continued. The helicopter transported the child to LeBonheur Children’s Hospital where injuries were determined to be minor.
Martin said that after the child was transported an officer spoke with the driver, who was not visibly impaired.  No charges will be filed unless tests yet-to-be analyzed indicate grounds for further investigation, according to the police chief.
