NP Cougar teams swept by Independence

The North Panola Cougars basketball teams took on Independence and did not fair very well as the Cougars were swept in district action on Friday night. The girls lost 42-24 while the boys lost 58-53.
The Lady Cougars took the floor first and were outplayed from the beginning. The Cougars only scored five points in the first quarter and were out scored by 15 points.
The Lady Cougars had a rough shooting night and went into the half down 26-10.
The second was not any brighter for the Lady Cougars and they took home a loss by the final of 42-24.
Leading the Lady Cougars in scoring was Kenya Edwards with seven points.
Other scorers were Jasmine Mays with five points; QuiTonya Webster and Johniecya Wilbourn with four points a piece and Paige Ward and Leah Shorty both with two points.
Independence boys 58, NP 53
In the boys game the Cougars controlled the game until the fourth quarter. They fell 58-53 but the game was played much closer than the final score.
In the first half the Cougars went down low to their post player Jamarcus Jones. He had 12 points in the half.
In the second half, free throws haunted the Cougars as they went 7-of-12 at the charity stripe. They shot over 50 percent from the line but those five points were the difference in the game.
Leading the Cougars in scoring was Jamarcus Jones with 26 points.
Other scorers were Vennis Mills, 12; Darrell Young, eight; Mario Fenner, four; Kenneth Jefferson, two and Jarvis Renix, one point.
The Cougars will face Holly Springs tonight at home in another district game. The game will tip-off at 6 p.m.
