Sardis fire rating improves; new pump okayed for well

By Rupert Howell
The Mississippi State Rating Bureau has notified the City of Sardis that their fire rating has dropped from seventh to sixth class effective August 1 which means savings for some property owners.
“Any insurance contracts covering dwellings located in the city may be endorsed from August 1, 2016 on a pro rata basis to take advantage of the current fire premiums indicated on our Mississippi dwelling manual,” the notification states.
“Comprehensive Dwelling Policies and Homeowner Policies also may be endorsed on a pro rata basis to take advantage of applicable rates or premiums,” the letter continues.
The letter was passed around Monday, August 8 during a special meeting when aldermen voted to declare an emergency and purchase a new pump and rigging in the approximate amount of $55,000 for one of the city’s three water wells, well #3 that needed immediate repair.
City Works Director Bubba McDowell assured city officials the remaining pumps and tank capacity could handle a fire emergency.
