Judge refers several cases to grand jury

Judge Bill McKenzie referred several cases to the grand jury during Batesville Municipal Court held Wednesday.
A preliminary hearing was held requesting a bond reduction for Parrish L. Donahue, 206 Woodland, Batesville, charged with felony possession of controlled substance, simple possession of controlled substance (four counts), firearm enhancement penalty, DUI-other and open container on April 19 after a wreck on Lakewood and Hwy. 6.
Parrish was represented by Attorney Tom Womble
“You’re not on trial today. This is a preliminary hearing, not a final trial,” the judge explained.
After a short hearing Womble asked the judge if Donahue’s bond could be reduced from $50,000 to $10,000.
“He’s a lifelong resident and business owner. He has no prior felonies,” Womble stated.
The city’s prosecuting attorney, Ryan Revere was against a reduction.
“He has additional charges pending for grand larceny. Warrants have been signed,” Revere said.
“We’ll rule on what’s in front of us,” McKenzie said.
His bond was set at $10,000 and he was referred to the grand jury.
Dekedris D. McMillan, 379 Tubbs Rd., Batesville, was referred to the grand jury for burglary and grand larceny. McMillan asked if his bond of $25,000 could be reduced.
Detective Justin Maples opposed a bond reduction.
“These are two good felonies. I believe $25,000 is a fair bond,” McKenzie ruled.
Darius M. Thomas, 112 West Mill Rd., Sardis, was referred to the grand jury for possession of stolen firearm.
Jateryance D. Smith, 209 Claude St., Batesville, bonded out prior to court and was referred to the grand jury for possession of a weapon by a felon, no seat belt and old fines of $127 due since March 2016.
Eric Cortney Smith, 878 Fox Gates Rd., Marks, bonded out prior to court for felony possession of controlled substance, no child restraint, driving while license suspended, no turn signal and old fines of $243.75 due since March 2012.
Jeremy D. Chapman, 297 Ford Rd., Batesville, bonded out prior to court for felony possession of controlled substance and simple possession of marijuana. He was referred to the grand jury.
Darius M. Thomas, 112 West Mill Rd., Sardis, was referred to the grand jury for possession of stolen firearm.
Gredrecus D. Leland, 204 Everette St., Batesville, was referred to the grand jury for aggravated assault. His bond was reduced from $50,000 to $25,000. He was represented by Attorney Stan Little.
Leland is not to return to Panola County until his court date.
Tevis D. Flowers, 8492 Hwy. 35 South, Batesville, was sentenced to six months in jail and fined $6,876 after entering guilty pleas to shoplifting- six counts.
Flowers entered guilty pleas to stealing three boxes of king size candy bars on April 25 from Circle K worth $131, a box of Snickers, two candy bars and other merchandise on April 26 from Dollar General, a 12-pack of Budweiser worth $4.95 and wrenches worth $169 from Lowes and Tractor Supply.
“Are wrenches easy to sell?” the judge asked.
He also failed to show up for the work program to satisfy old fines of $2,313. His total fines equal $9,189.
Jecoleman L. Street, 164 Otto Sanford, Courtland, had a case for open container continued.
Quentin L. Cox, 101 Everette St., Batesville, failed to appear to answer charges for possession of marijuana in a vehicle. Al Williams was notified.
Staci S. Chapman, 2791 Shiloh Rd., Courtland, was fined $1,587 for possession of controlled substance, possession of paraphernalia, no tag and no driver’s license. Chapman was fined $1,587 due in 30 days.
Timothy W. Bledsoe, 103 Sunrise Cove, Batesville, was represented by Attorney J. Wilson. Bledsoe was found guilty of three counts of domestic violence. He was sentenced to 90 days jail time suspended pending good behavior for two years and fined $600 due in 45 days.
Taiwan S. Obey, 557 Sanders Rd., Sardis, was fined $1,216 for possession of marijuana in a vehicle, no driver’s license and expired tag.
Lakeisha N. Campbell, 108 Taylor Rd., Holcomb, was fined $1,747 for possession of marijuana in a vehicle, firearm enhancement penalty and driving while license suspended.
Cortaveious B. Cox, 304 Dewberry St., Sardis, was fined $443 for simple possession of marijuana.
“How old are you?” the judge asked.
“I’m 19,” Cox replied.
“Do you go to school?” McKenzie asked.
“Yessir, I go to Northwest,” Cox replied.
“Well, leave the drugs aloneand go to school and make something of yourself. The fines are due in 30 days,” the judge ruled.
Epsie J. Morgan, 125 Alex Gates Rd., Batesville, entered a guilty plea to simple possession of marijuana and fined $443.
Mathew D. Snyder, 3589 Hwy. 51, Pope, paid fines of $598 in full prior to court for simple possession of marijuana and failure to dim lights.
Deandre D. Cole, 112 Williams, Batesville, failed to appear to answer charges for possession of marijuana in a vehicle, driving while license suspended, no proof of insurance and old fines of $1,670 due since November 2013. Fox Bonding was notified.
Shaquille L. Winfield, 2794 Bethlehem Rd., Batesville, entered a guilty plea to having possession of marijuana on April 22. He also had old fines of $683 due since May 2015.
In lieu of paying fines he opted to enter the city’s work release program for 20 days to satisfy fines.
Renita L. Taylor, 117-A Vance St., Batesville, failed to appear to answer charges for disorderly conduct and interfering with a business along with old fines of $878 due since November 2015.
Crissy G. Flowers, 216 Meadowbrook Rd., Greenwood, paid fines of $1,146 in full prior to court for shoplifting.
Cameron J. Wilks, 1284 Macedonia Rd., Batesville, paid $1,149 in full prior to court for old fines-contempt of court due since July 2015.
James E. Ford, 6525 W. Brown Deer Rd., Brown Deer, Wis., had a case dismissed for improper equipment, driving while license suspended and no proof of insurance after the officer explained it was an error in Wisconsin’s system and requested the tickets be dismissed.
Quintarius A. Miller, 2823 Bienville, Ocean Springs, had a case for possession of marijuana continued until June 8.
Joshua A. Floyd, 307 Fifth St., Marks, had a case for DUI and old fines continued. He’s represented by Attorney Bryson.
Katrina L. Love, 1159-A Lawrence Bros., Batesville, returned for review for old fines of $2,428. Fines were due March 24. She was given an extension after speaking with the judge.
