Homer Alton Carvan

ENID––Homer A. Carvan, 82, died Monday February 15, 2016 at his residence.

Services were held Thursday at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Enid. Dr. Marty Evans and Truman Scarborough officiated. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Carvan, born July 25, 1933, to the late Gerard Watters and Ava Lillian Phillips Carvan, in Teasdale, served in the United States Army. He retired from the Mississippi Department of Transportation and also was a farmer.

He served as chief of the Enid Volunteer Fire Department and was a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Faye Carvan.

Survivors include:  six children, Emily Goff of Enid, Estelle Roberts of Savannah, Tenn., Homer Carvan Jr. of Gulf Shores, Ala., Chris Carvan of Enid, Bill Frost of Oakland, David Frost of Independence; three siblings Pat McGregor of Enid, Willie Carvan of Enid and Kenneth Carvan of Enid; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

William Deaton

BATESVILLE––William Nelson Deaton, Jr., 89, died Sunday, February 14, 2016, at his residence.

Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until service time. Father Sam Messina will officiate. 

Deaton was born March 1, 1926, to the late William and Grace Watts Deaton, in Iuka. He was a graduate of Iuka High School where he was captain of the basketball team and received an award for Most Well Rounded Student. He attended the University of North Alabama and served in the United States Army during World War II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He worked for the Mississippi Highway Department and retired in 1990.

Survivors include: his wife, Marie T. Deaton of Batesville; three sons; Christoper C. Deaton and Timothy W. Deaton, both of Batesville and William Gregory Deaton of Charleston, S.C.; siblings, James Lee Deaton of Memphis, Dorothy Fitts of Jackson, Tenn., Donald Deaton of Sumter, S.C. and three grandchildren.

Peggy Hawkins

SARDIS––Peggy Hawkins, 78, formerly of Cleveland, died January 28, 2016.

Memorial services will be held at a later date. Her remains were donated to Genesis Medical Research. 

She was preceded in death by: her parents, Robert Lee and Vira Bufkin; one daughter, Dawn Carollee and one son, Mark Allan.

She is survived by one daughter, Shawn Hawkins of Memphis.

In lieu of flower donations, memorials can be made to Oxford-Lafayette Humane Society, P.O. Box 1674, Oxford, Miss. 35655.

Joanna Fondren Hines

COURTLAND––Joanna Fondren Hines, 88, died February 17, 2016, at her residence.

Services will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. at Mt. Gillion M.B. Church in Sardis. Pastor Walter Newson will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Gillion Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held Saturday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.

Hines, born Aug. 8, 1927, in Batesville, to the late Jessie Fondren and Clyster Joiner, wsa a homemaker and a member of Mt. Gillion M.B. Church in Sardis where she was an usher and on the Mother Board.

Survivors include: two sons, James Spraggin and Jimmie Hines, both of Courtland; one daughter, Christine Spraggin of Courtland; 11 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Lloyd Benton Lockwood Jr.

BATESVILLE––Lloyd Benton Lockwood Jr., 70, died Friday, February 12, 2016, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-East, Memphis. 

Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Mt. Gillion M.B. Church. Keith Cole will officiate. Burial will be held in Shiloh Church Cemetery in Courtland. Visitation will be held today 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary. 

Lockwood, born June 16, 1945, in Chicago, to the late Lloyd Benton Lockwood Sr. and Allie Lockwood, was a retired truck driver. 

Survivors include: his wife, Dale Lockwood of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; 11 sons, Dejaun Lockwood, Benton Lloyd Lockwood, Andre Lockwood, Oscar Lockwood and Douglas Lockwood, all of Madison, Wis.; Deshaun Lockwood, Robert Lockwood, Lorrez Ward, Antino Lockwood, Denadre Ward and Lindale Lockwood, all of Chicago; seven daughters, Denise Lockwood of Madison, Felicias Lockwood, Tamika Lockwood, Cheryl Lockwood, Kimberly Lockwood, Latifah Lockwood and Lakiah Lockwood, and Vanessa Lockwood, all of Chicago; two brothers, Jimmy Lockwood and Lamont Lockwood, both of Beaufort, N.C.; two sisters, Eskin Lockwood and Audrey Lockwood, both of Chicago; 62 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

S. C. Sullivant Jr.

BATESVILLE––S.C. Sullivant Jr., 68, died Monday, February 15, 2016 at the Veterans Medical Center in Memphis. Memorial services were held Wednesday at Wells Funeral Home. Sammy Mulloy and Sherry Hopkins officiated. 

Sullivant,  born June 29, 1947 to the late Floy Scott Sullivant and Silas Cypert Sullivant, Sr. served in the U.S. Army and was a Presbyterian. He worked as a farmer and mechanic.

Survivors include:  three sons, Bryan Cody Sullivant of Batesville, Walter Hayden Sullivant of Starkville and Chad Sullivant of Pope, six grandchildren and his caregiver, Pat Rowland Sullivant.

Agnes Lorene Watson

POPE––Agnes Lorene Watson, 85, died Monday, February 15, 2016 at Greenwood Leflore Hospital.

Services were held Thursday at Wells Funeral Home. Burial was held at Lambert Cemetery. Dr. Bob Hill officated. Wells Funeral Home had charge. 

Watson, born October 10, 1930, to the late Elbert Ray and Mittie Ray Boyette in Tutwiler, was formerly employed with Garan Manufacturing in Lambert and was a member of the Baptist Church in Water Valley.

Survivors include three children; Sheila Goza of Garvin, Okla., Jeanette Perez of Mobile, Ala., and Richard Watson of Pope; siblings; Irene Bert of Locke Station, Vonnie Johnson of Batesville, David Boyette of Meridian, Betty Tutor and Tommy Boyette, both of Batesille; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
