The North Delta Lady Green Wave made a strong bid for the District 1-AAA title, but came upon a tough Kirk Academy team Saturday evening.
Kirk stopped the Lady Wave 62-35.
North Delta made it to the championship game with a 61-43 win over Bayou Academy Friday night. Seventh-grade sensation Ally Alford scored 74-points during the three-day tournament and was named to the All-tournament team along with North Delta teammates Ginger Stephens and Sarah Johnson.
The Lady Wave is gearing up for the North State Tournament that will be held this week at Indianola Academy. North Delta played Riverfield Academy (No. 3 in District 3) in the first round of playoffs yesterday but the score was not available at press time. The winner of that game advances to round 2 to face District 2 champion, Leake Academy, Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
ND 61, Bayou Academy 43
Alford was the game leading scorer in the Bayou game Friday night with 34 points. Bayou just did not have an answer for the Green Wave offense as North Delta scored 22 points in the first quarter. North Delta led 22-17 at the end of the first quarter and 29-20 at halftime.
The teams kept pace with each other with North Delta scoring 12 while Bayou had 11 points. In the fourth quarter, the Lady Wave pulled away outscoring Bayou 20-12.
Alford led in scoring with 32 points and two rebounds, followed by Sarah Johnson with 14 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two assists. Other scorers include Mary Emily Morris and Ginger Stephens with five points, two steals and one rebound each; Megan Bollinger, three points, 11 rebounds, one steal; and Faith Bollinger, two points, four rebounds and two steals.
Kirk Academy 62, ND 35
The first half was as close of a game as the North Delta Lady Wave could hope it would be. The game was tied at five after the first quarter. Kirk increased the lead to 18-12 at halftime.
Using their pressure defense, Kirk turned the game fully in its favor in the second half, limiting North Delta to seven points in the third quarter while scoring 18.
Kirk sent the double team to limit Alford who scored 13 points and Sarah Johnson who scored three points in the game. Johnson also pulled down 13 rebounds in the game.
Other scorers include Faith Bolinger, nine points; Morris, four points; Emy Cay Donaldson and Stephens, three points each.
