Doise Mae Ellis Andrews

BATESVILLE––Doise Mae Ellis Andrews, 69, died Saturday, January 9, 2016, at her residence.
Services will be held today at 1 p.m. at Mt. Gillion M.B. Church in Sardis. Pastor Darrin Ellis will officiate. Burial will be in New Hope Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held today from noon until service time. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.
Andrews, born May 10, 1946, in Attala County, to the late Selma Dee Ellis and Ollie Mae White, was a retired nurse aide at Panola County Health Department. She was a member of New Hope M.B. Church in Batesville.
Survivors include: her husband, Damon Andrews Sr. of Batesville; two sons, Derrick Andrews and Damon Lamar Andrews, both of Batesville; one daughter, Carolyn Andrews Webb of Batesville; one brother, Wesley Ellis of Batesville; four sisters, Mable Trantham of Courtland, Jane Hamilton of North Carolina, Benika Milan of Batesville and Clara Reed of Los Angeles; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

COURTLAND––John Ree Bishop Sr., 72, died Friday, January 8, 2016, at his residence.
Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at New Bethlehem M.B. Church in Batesville. Visitation will be held today from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.
Bishop, born Nov. 26, 1943, in Batesville, to the late Jimmy Bishop and Eveia Thomas, graduated from Patton Lane High School. He was a retired maintenance worker at Thermos and a member of Mt. Zion Church.
Survivors include: his wife, Mazzie Willingham Bishop of Courtland; two daughters, Doyleen Beasley of Memphis and Cheryl Jackson of Batesville; one son, John Bishop Jr. of Batesville; 11 sisters, Theresa Leland, Mable Brisco, May Adams, Bernie McKinney, Linda Bishop and Fay Thomas,  all of Sardis, Hattie Adams of California, Viola Scott of Jonestown, Ark., Louise Adams of Oklahoma, Bobbie Adams of North Carolina and Lou Adams of Arkansas; seven brothers, Gene Bishop, Jimmy Bishop, Tommy Bishop, all of Sardis, John Adams Jr. of West Memphis, Ark., James Adams of Jonesboro, Jeffery Adams and Joe Adams, both of Florida; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Frances Carnell Brown

BATESVILLE––Frances Carnell Brown, 100, died Thursday, January 7, 2016, at her residence.
Services were held Thursday at South Hopewell M.B. Church in Oxford. Rev. Terry Wortham officiated. Burial was in Browning Cemetery in Taylor. Cooley’s Mortuary had charge.
Brown, born Dec. 26, 1915, in Taylor, to the late Monford Mackey and Carrie Fondren, was a member of the Eastern Star and South Hopewell M.B. Church in Oxford.
Survivors include: one son, Lawrence Brown of Batesville; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Thomas B. Burnett

BATESVILLE––Thomas B. “Bop” Burnett, 88, died Tuesday January 12, 2016 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.
Services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at Batesville First Baptist Church. Dr. Tommy Snyder and Rev. John Howell, Jr. will officiate. Burial will be held at Forrest Memorial Park. Wells Funeral Home has charge.
Burnett, born Sept. 25, 1927 to the late Malcolm D. Burnett and Jennie Kibler Burnett in Charleston, served in the U.S. Army. He was a deacon and Sunday school teacher for 30 plus years at McIvor Baptist and Batesville First Baptist Church. He was a self employed contractor and owner of Burnett and Sons Construction Inc. He was a member of the Batesville Building Committee and worked for the City of Batesville Code Enforcement office for 25 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Robertson Burnett.
Survivors include: daughters, Brenda Burnett Womble of Hernando, Janice Burnett Blair of Batesville; son, Steven Thomas “Bubba” Burnett of Batesville; one brother, William F. “Billy” Burnett of Batesville; eight grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Jerry Gowen Sr.

HERNANDO––Jerry “Hoot” Gowen, Sr., 82, died Saturday, January 9, 2016 at his home in Hernando. Born and raised in Panola County, he was a retired district sales manager for Ryder Truck Lines.  Funeral services were Tuesday at Hernando United Methodist Church where he was a member. Interment was in Hernando Memorial Park.
He was an avid golfer who also enjoyed hunting and fishing.  An outstanding athlete and Army veteran, he played baseball for the U. S. Army and was a member of the University of Mississippi Rebel Club.
Survivors include his wife, Jane Wilbanks Gowen; sons, Jerry Gowen, Jr. of Hernando and Jeffrey Gowen of Collierville, Tenn.; four grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

Harold W.  Johnson

BATESVILLE–Harold Wayne Johnson, 80, died Saturday, January 9, 2016, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, January 18, 2016 at Mt. Olivet Methodist Church in Batesville. Wells Funeral Home has charge.
Johnson, born Jan. 26, 1935, to the late Arthur Raymond and Bertha Lee Dillard Johnson in Cross Plains, Texas, served during the Vietnam War as a gunnery sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. He was a member of Mt. Olivet Methodist Church. He was a retired truck driver and security officer.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lena Faye Johnson, and son, Cary Johnson.
Survivors include: two daughters, Loriann Johnson of Knoxville, Tenn., Susan Anderson of Atlanta, Ga.; two sons, Brett Johnson of Hernando, Jeffery W. Johnson of Water Valley; one sister Wanda Roberts of Taylor, Texas; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth Berlene Oldham

COMO––Elizabeth Berlene Oldham, 73, died Monday, January 11, 2016 at Hermitage Gardens in Southaven.  
Services were held Thursday at Ray Nowell Funeral Home. Burial was in Friendship Cemetery in Como. Ray Nowell Funeral Home had charge.
Oldham, born to the late Viola Brumley and Oscar Souder, was a member of Como United Methodist Church.  
She was preceded in death by her husband, Duck Oldham.
Survivors include: two sons, Ted Binford of Memphis and Scott Binford of Como; one stepson, Mark Oldham of Clemson, S.C.; one sister, Elaine Smith of Marion, Ark.; and four grandchildren.

Carol Denise Roberts

SENATOBIA––Carol Denise Roberts, 50, died Thursday, January 7, 2016.
Services will be held Saturday at noon at Second Baptist Life Center in Coldwater. Burial will be in Hammond Hill Cemetery in Como. Rodgers Funeral Home has charge.
Roberts was a retired educator and a member of Hammond Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include: her husband, Crevessie Roberts; two daughters, Alicia Cathey of Horn Lake and Krystal Reynolds of Senatobia; one son, Robert Reynolds of Como; three sisters, Rosie Blocton of Box Springs, Ga., Jessie Jones of Como and Inez Mitchell of Southaven; three brothers, Prentiss Tate of Senatobia, Willie Earl Reed of Southaven and Kenny Reed of Batesville; seven grandchildren.

Nancy Wright Taylor

COMO––Nancy Wright Taylor, 66, died Sunday, January 10, 2016, at Baptist Hospital-East. She was a teacher.
Services will be held Monday at noon at Hammond Hill M.B. Church. Visitation will be held Sunday from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. at Felix Cauthen Funeral Home. Burial will be in Hammond Hill M.B. Church Cemetery.
Survivors include: one daughter, Megan Taylor of Como; one son, Adrian Taylor of Como; one sister, Sharon Madlock of Milwaukee; four brothers, Earl Wright of Milwaukee, Larry Wright, Terry Wright and Donald Wright, all of Como and five grandchildren.

Charles Edward Upchurch

BATESVILLE–Charles Edward Upchurch, age 77, died Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at Methodist Hospital in Olive Branch.
Services will be held today at 11 a.m. at Wells Funeral Home. Burial will be held at Forrest Memorial Park.
Upchurch, born May 5, 1938 to the late Edward Upchurch and Evelyn Hood Upchurch in Belzoni, was a sales representative for many different companies. He was a member of the Batesville First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include: one son, Charles David Upchurch of Taylorsville; a daughter, Stephanie Upchurch Jones of Cleveland; two step children, Renee Lawrence and Jerry Ratcliffe, both of Batesville; one sister, Sandra Jamison of Marks; one brother, Paul Upchurch of Horn Lake; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Callie Mae Woodson

COMO––Callie Mae Woodson, 75, died Thursday, January 7, 2016.
Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Mt. Moriah C.M.E. Church in Como. Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until service time and also today from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. at Rodgers Funeral Home in Coldwater. Burial will be held at Liberty Hill Cemetery. Rodgers Funeral Home has charge.
Woodson was a member of Mt. Moriah C.M.E. Church where she was an usher.
Survivors include; her husband, Shelly Rooks Woodson Sr.; four daughters, Janice Pope of Pope, Shirley Rooks of Como, Cora Rooks of Holly Springs and Anna Rooks of Como; two sons, Charles Rooks and Shelly Rooks Jr., both of Como; three sisters, Lula Bell Irving of Senatobia, Matte B. Wilbourn of Tunica and Alice Wilbourn of Memphis; 18 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
