New owner wants to enlarge Sardis Lake Marina

By Rupert Howell
It’s been less than a year since AMS purchased Sardis Marina. The prior owner had sought permission to sell some of the slips. The new owner now wants to enlarge the marina.
That issue came before the Sardis board of aldermen and mayor during a recess meeting last Tuesday. The City holds a lease on property at the lake where the marina is located and changes to the marina require both approval of the city and the U.S. Corps of Engineers.
Sardis officials approved the measure without dissent during the recess meeting as well as approving a $119,000 bid for the improvements of a sewer system lift station near Greenhill subdivision.
Public Works Director Bubba McDowell presented quotes reminding aldermen that they had deemed the repair an emergency.
Engineer Mike Faulkner with TSI Engineers who will oversee the repair project said the bid of Northwest Contracting appeared to be the lowest and best but that he was comfortable with any of the three bidding.
The board also discussed a reported trouble spot in a lot behind Circle Z convenience store facing Highway 315 allegedly belonging to Tim Holliday.
Mayor Billy Russell said the lot had been the scene of a knifing and shooting.
“If he would give authority (to police) to run people off of the property,” the problem could be rectified according to Tommy Shuler who is attorney for the town board.
By allowing people to do illegal things on the property, “He is subjecting himself to considerable liability,” Shuler said.
Shuler said the town could possibly bring pervading nuisance charges against the property owner for allowing illegal activity to continue.
