Pogue gets 200th coaching win, goes for 201 against Southaven Thursday
By Myra Bean
South Panola head football coach Lance Pogue claimed his 200th coaching victory in a 35-0 shutout over district foe Tupelo.
Pogue will be going for his 201st win Thursday night when South Panola travels to Southaven for a Thursday night matchup with a 7 o’clock kickoff. Southaven was expected to have a banner season during preseason but quickly learned what was in store for them when they fell to No. 5 ranked Oxford 35-0. Now sitting at 4-4 overall, 1-3 district, Southaven is just trying to be the one to secure that number four spot for a playoff berth. The only way that will happen will be if the Chargers can knock off Desoto Central next week and probably Horn Lake in the last game. It would help Southaven if Desoto Central would lose to Tupelo Friday night and South Panola on Thursday, November 5.
Wallace is their go-to guy and is a playmaker, according to Pogue. He looks good on tape with his 5’8”, 195-pound frame.
South Panola head football coach Lance Pogue claimed his 200th coaching victory in a 35-0 shutout over district foe Tupelo.
The Tigers (8-0 overall, 4-0 district) increased its win streak to 23 games with the win. The Hall of Fame coach owns a 200-50 overall coaching record. At South Panola he is 116-10 with one national championship in 2010 and five state championships including last year’s 27-21 overtime win over Oak Grove.
Not many people were aware that this milestone was fast approaching for Pogue.
“I don’t ever talk about myself,” he said. “I have always said it is not about me. I have been coaching a long time. A lot of good players have played for me and coached with me, a lot of fond memories. It is something special to me and it will always last forever. It will just be a great memory.”
SP vs Southaven

Southaven is coming off a 20-10 loss to Columbus (6-2; 4-0) whom South Panola will host October 30 for homecoming.
Their only district win was an overtime tilt against Tupelo last week, 13-7. The Chargers have allowed 140 points this year, the third best record in 1-6A. Columbus has allowed the fewest with 124 points, followed by South Panola with 129 points.
Pogue noted one of the strengths on the Southaven defense is their speed.
“Good defensive team,” he said. “They stand out. They have been in every game. They are fast, always have great speed. One of the best defensive teams I have seen Southaven have.”
However, offense is a different story for Southaven as they have only scored 162 points, last in 1-6A. Desoto Central has scored the most with 397 points, followed by South Panola with 293.
“They had a lot of seniors to graduate last year,” he said. “They have had a couple of games they let slip away. They have quality capabilities. I don’t know what it is, they have a missing link here or there. It’s been close in some of those games.”
Southaven is led on offense by sophomore quarterback No. 8, Matthew Martin, senior running back Dea’undre Wallace, No. 1, and senior wide receiver Ontario Rambo wearing No. 10.
Wallace is their go-to guy and is a playmaker, according to Pogue. He looks good on tape with his 5’8”, 195-pound frame.
“He can run and they throw it to him,” Pogue said.
