The curtain goes up tonight at Panola Playhouse for “The Miracle Worker,” a play by William Gibson, about the life of Helen Keller and her teacher, Anne Sullivan.

Alabama native Keller, born in 1880, lost her hearing and sight at age 2, and learned to speak and communicate through the teaching of Sullivan.

Sullivan became famous as “The Miracle Worker” for unlocking the lonely, dark world of Helen by teaching her language.  Keller went on to become a celebrated author, political activist and lecturer.
