Batesville Woman’s Club gets overview of county recycling program

Panola County Solid Waste Supervisor Jennifer Jackson spoke to the Batesville Woman’s Club at their January meeting.  She chronicled the progress of  the Panola County Recycling Program during 2014.

Eleven bins of plastic, 17 bins of paper products, and 26 bins of cardboard have been taken to the Oxford recycling center.

Because the current effort has been successful, plans are being made to add two new bins in Sardis.

She also noted there are two 20-foot trailers at the Courtland waste transfer facility for collection of electronics.

Tires are also being accepted for recycling at that facility.  Currently, materials from garbage pickup are being disposed of at the landfill in Pontotoc instead of the previous one at Tunica.
Ms. Jackson announced plans to demonstrate and encourage recycling through educating school students about the benefits of the program.

Plans are also underway for demonstrations of solid waste equipment at Springfest and a possible HazMat collection day.

During the business meeting Jackie Sergi from the education area asked for volunteers to help with the Summer Reading Program at Batesville Library.  She also reminded members to save “Box Tops for Education.”

Plans are in progress for a Valentine party for students in special classes at Batesville Elementary in February.

Art chairperson Glenda Bailey stated Youth Art entries will be collected from South Panola and North Delta schools February 13 to be judged for district and state conventions.

An agreement has been made for the Woman’s Club to partner with Panola Partnership Main Street project for beautification of the downtown park at the Eureka entrance to the square.
The conservation area chairperson encouraged members to assist in the Sardis Lake Eagle Watch and announced a speaker from Strawberry Plains Audubon Center will present the club’s February program.

International outreach chairperson Hettie Burnett thanked members for donating supplies for bread baked and shared with deployed military personnel.
