Herman Flemmons

SAUKVILLAGE, Ill.––Graveside memorial services for Herman Flemmons, 86, formerly of Locke Station, were held Saturday, September 6, 2014, at Marks Cemetery.

Solan Pruzin Funeral Home and Crematory of Indiana had charge. 

Flemmons, died October 28, 2013, in Saukvillage, Ill. 

Flemmons was born Oct. 20, 1927, in Itta Bena, to the late A.V. Flemmons and Willie Lee Flemmons. 

Survivors include: two sons, Bo Flemmons of St. John, Ind. and Jack Flemmons of Saukvillage, Ill.


Martha Branscome Fielder

WATER VALLEY––Martha Branscome Fielder, 81, died Wednesday, September 3, 2014, at her residence. She was the mother of Pamela Fielder Stafford of Batesville. 

Services were held Friday at Waller Funeral Home. Burial was in Anchor Cemetery. Waller Funeral Home had charge.

Fielder, born July 30, 1933, in Quitman County to the late Lillian Bridges and James Parker Branscome, was a member of Living Church of God.

She was preceded in death by her husband William Arthur Fielder.

Survivors along with her daughter include: daughter, Sondra Fielder Peters of Palmyra, Tenn.; one son, Steven Wayne Fielder of Water Valley; one sister, Josie Bennett of Pontotoc; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Memorials in Mrs. Fielder’s memory may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105-1905.

DeAngelo and DeAngela Huey

COLDWATER––Twins DeAngelo Huey, a boy, and DeAngela Huey, a girl, were stillborn Tuesday, September 2, 2014. 

Services were held Saturday at Rodgers Funeral Home in Coldwater. Burial was in Hunter Chapel Cemetery in Como. Rodgers Funeral Home had charge.

Survivors include: parents, Sierra and David Huey of Senatobia and grandparents, Angie and Terry Jackson, Angelic and James Gardner and China and David Huey Sr., all of Senatobia. 

John Mark Smith

POPE–John Mark Smith, age 35, passed away Friday afternoon, September 5, 2014, in Pope.

Services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Liberty Hill Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Rev. Derrick Simmons will officiate. Wells Funeral Home has charge of arrangements. 

Smith, born May 15, 1979, in Memphis, to Billy Smith of Pope and the late Virginia Anne Smith, was a graduate of South Panola High School, Class of 1997, and worked the last 18 years for the Mississippi Department of Transportation. While in high school, he was very active in the FFA. He was a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church where he played on the church softball team. 

Survivors include: wife, Ashley Ellis Smith of Pope; two daughters, Virginia Rose Smith and Mae Claire Smith of Pope; father, Billy Smith of Pope; one sister, Elizabeth Anne Smith, of Pope.

Memorial donations may be made to either the Liberty Hill Baptist Church Cemetery Fund or the National Kidney Foundation. Donations can be made via mail: National Kidney Foundation Finance Department, 30 East 33rd St., New York, NY 10016.


Gladys Smith 

SARDIS––Gladys Smith, 60, died Thursday, August 28, 2014, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.

Services were held Wednesday, September 3 at Mt. Zion M.B. Church in Sardis. Rev. Derwin Dickerson officiated. Burial was in Cistern Hill Church Cemetery. Henderson Funeral Home had charge.

Smith, born March 17, 1954, in Como, to the late Madison Smith Sr. and Vinnie Mae Daniel, attended North Panola High School. She worked in the food services department at Finch Henry Job Corps and was a member of New Faith Ministries.

Survivors include: one daughter, Ankethia Smith-Rowell of Sardis; two sons, Anthony Smith and Devian Smith, both of Oxford; two brothers, Madison Smith and Rufus “Bill” Smith, both of Sardis and four sisters, Ruby Johnson and Ester Wilbourn, both of Como, Rosie Daniel of Sardis and Mattie Perry of Jacksonville, Ark.


Berry Franklin Snider

POPE––Berry Franklin “Frank” Snider, 74, died Thursday, September 4, 2014, at his residence.

Services were held Saturday at Liberty Hill Baptist Church. Rev. Derrick Simmons officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Dickins Funeral Home had charge.

Snider, born July 28, 1940, to the late James Louis Snider and Mary Duke Snider, was a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church, a veteran of the Mississippi National Guard, and a farmer.

He was preceded in death by one son, Jason Wilbourne Snider. 

Survivors include: his wife of 52 years, Ann Wilbourne Snider of Pope; one daughter, LeAnn Snider Grantham (Billy) of Hernando; two sons, Jamie Snider (Stefanie) and Gary Snider (Sommer), of Pope; one brother, Jimmy Snider of Batesville; and four grandchildren.

Burton Eugene “Gene” Rayburn

Burton Eugene “Gene” Rayburn, 78, died Sunday, September 7, 2014, in Batesville.

Services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow in Forrest Memorial Park. 

Visitation will be held 11 a.m. until service time. Dr. Jeff Holland will officiate. 

Rayburn, born February 20, 1936 in Vicksburg, to the late Charles Burton Rayburn and Alma Rayburn Brown, was a 1962 graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi with a B.S. degree in recreation, where he became a Golden Glove Champion. 

Upon his graduation, he went to Starke, Fla. as the director of the recreation department. In 1973, he returned to Mississippi as manager of John Kyle State Park until his retirement in 2001. 

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Georgia Mims Rayburn.

Survivors include: his wife, Betty Luttrell Rayburn of Sardis; three daughters, Pam Rayburn Queen of Flowood, Tami Rayburn Robison of Batesville, Sandra Alvarez of Starke; step-daughter, Vicki Dubose of Bell, Fla.; son, Stu Rayburn of Waveland; two step-sons, Richard Russell of Brunswick, Ga., James Russell of Charleston; two brothers, Warren Rayburn of Laurel, J.C. Rayburn of Clarksdale; seven grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Jamie Loyd Rushing

Jamie Loyd Rushing, 80, died Friday, September 5, 2014, at Baptist Hospital-North Mississippi.

Graveside services were held Sunday at Forrest Memorial Park. Reverend Clay Baker officiated. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Rushing was born April 26, 1934 in Stewart, to the late James Ollie and Ella Parrish Rushing. He was a retired truck driver for Valley Foods. He served in the U.S. Army acquiring a rank of Private First Class.

Survivors include: daughter, Melinda Gehrett of Canton; son, Ken Rushing of Crystal Springs; two sisters, Opal Rushing Jaudon and Lois Rushing Roberts, both of Harrison, Ark.; three brothers, Roy Rushing, Nathan Rushing, both of Harrison, Ark., and David Rushing of Eupora; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Helen Bolen Carlisle Stroup

BATESVILLE––Mrs. Helen Bolen Carlisle Stroup, 64, passed away on Thursday, September 4, 2014, at her home in Batesville, Mississippi.

Services were held Sunday at Dickins Funeral Home with Reverend Martin Case officiating.  Burial was in Batesville Magnolia Cemetery. 

Helen Carlisle Stroup was born June 9, 1950, in Batesville, Mississippi.  She always felt her calling in life was to be a teacher.  She achieved her goal by graduating Salutatorian of her class from Crowder High School, where she was a member of the basketball team and involved in many other school activities, and receiving her BS in Education from Delta State University.  A retired teacher, Helen Carlisle Stroup taught for 25 years:  teaching first grade at Crowder for 12 years and fourth grade at South Panola for 13 years.  Each morning as she stepped into her classroom, she prayed:  “Dear Lord, thank You for this day.  Please love me through these children and love them through me.  Please let them see You in me.  Amen.”  She loved teaching children not only the required curriculum but also manners, discipline, and other life lessons which would help them achieve their goals.  She was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she once taught Sunday School, a member of the South Panola Foundation for Public Education, and the Panola County Humane Society.  She loved flowers and working in her yard, had a true talent for organizing and decorating, and enjoyed collecting rabbits.  She had such compassion and was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, aunt, mentor, teacher, and friend.  

Survivors include: her husband, Jerry Stroup of Batesville; her daughter, Megan Carlisle Willoughby and son-in-law, Charles M. Willoughby, both of Hernando; her sisters, Carolyn Toliver and Margaret Darby, both of Batesville; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased in death by her father, Birl M. Bolen and her first husband, Robert N. “Bobby” Carlisle.
