In February, the South Panola High School Rifle Team competed in the Air Force National Air Rifle Championship in Anniston, Ala.
The team earned the invitation to this national match through qualification matches that began at the first of the school year.
After three days of competition against elite teams from all over the world, South Panola High School won the 2014 Air Force National Title.
The top four shooters went on to the All Service World Championship Match in Ohio and placed 7th.
Our two varsity seniors earned invitations and scholarships to shoot on Division I collegiate shooting teams. It was as exceptional year that put SPHS and Batesville on the on the map as the team to compete against.
The team achieved this level of excellence by committing to a practice schedule that extends from August through June and traveling to compete against the best teams without any financial support from the school or the Air Force except for a small transportation budget from the district.
All of the other money required for travel expenses and supplies was earned through fund-raisers.
Ammunition alone cost over $1,400. Other expenses exceeded $16,000.
Team members also excel academically and are active in community service.
They typify the Air Force core value of excellence in all we do.
These students have brought great honor and recognition to our community and school and we will honor their achievement by presenting them a Championship Ring just as we do for all of our athletes that perform at this level.
We need your help to raise $5,500 to make this a reality. Please consider a donation.
The South Panola Athletic Foundation (P.O. Box 506, Batesville, 38606) is collecting contributions or you may drop off donations at South Panola High School, attention Bob Mims, or at The Panolian.
Checks should be made payable to SPHS AFJROTC Rifle.
