CHARLESTON–Guy Dees, 78, died Friday, December 27, 2013.
The Family will receive friends Sunday, December 29, 2013 from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm at Mt Pisgah Baptist Church. The service will be Monday, December 30, 2013 at 10:00 am at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Mt. Pisgah Cemetery.
Dees was a retired school teacher from Charleston High School. He was a member of Batesville First Assembly of God church.
Survivors include: his wife, Betty Dees of Teasdale; two sons, Kelly Dees of Teasdale and Dewayne of Grenada; five sisters, Bessie Havens of Southaven, Kay Hutton and Joyce Reeves of Linden, Tenn., Marcie Swift of Germantown and Emily Faulkner of Courtland; and one brother Roger Dees of Teasdale and four grandchildren, Duncan Dees and Jillian Dees of Grenada, MS and Gavin Dees and Allison Dees of Houston, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents Duncan and Gladys Dees.
Memorial contributions may be made to Batesville First Assembly of God church.
CHARLESTON–Sam Doubleday, 62, died Friday, December 27, 2013. He wa a mechanic at Crown Cork and Seal in Batesville.
Services were held Sunday at Newsom Funeral Home. Burial was in Bethel Cemetery.
He was a member of Springhill Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sherry Doubleday.
Survivors include: two daughters, Stephanie Sims of Oakland and Lee Ann Doubleday, of Okland; four brothers, Leslie Doubleday and Barry Doubleday, both of Oakland, Lewis Doubleday of Charleston and David Doubleday of Batesville; two sisters, Susie Carvan of Enid and Elizabeth Vance and two grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society.
CHARLESTON–Edith Fowler, 87, died Sunday, December 22, 2013.
Services were held Friday at Newsom Funeral Home. Burial was in Magnolia Gardens. Newsom Funeral Home had charge.
Fowler was a retired bus driver for Tallahatchie County Schools.
Survivors include: one daughter, Patsy Fowler of Lambert; one son, Paul Fowler of Batesville; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
OAKLAND–John Wilbert Poynor, Jr., 48, died Friday, December 27, 2013 in Oakland.Services were held Monday at Wells Funeral Home. Burial was in Long Creek Cemetery near Courtland. Wells Funeral Home had charge.Poynor, born October 30, 1965 in Batesville, to John Wilbert Poynor and Betty Ruth Ragon Poynor Alexander, was a construction worker.
Survivors include: one daughter, Brittany Beard of Batesville; one son, James Dewey Boyd of Courtland; mother, Betty Poynor Alexander of Oakland; two sisters, Debbie Poynor Lantrip of Pope and Tina Poynor Bannister of Jackson; two brothers, Toby Poynor of Pope and Joseph Dees of Nashville; grandfather, Leon Braswell of Batesville, and three grandchildren.
BATESVILLE–Robert Harold Gladney, age 71, died Saturday, December 28, 2013.Services will be held Thursday, January 2, 2013, at the Batesville Prebyterian Church beginning at noon. Visitation will be held 10:30 a.m. until service time at the church. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery in Batesville.
Gladney, born in Batesville on August 3, 1942, to Dixie (Scruggs) and Charles H. Gladney, was a 1960 graduate of Batesville High School as well as an Arkansas State University graduate where he played football and was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity.
He was a realtor, earning a designation from the Farm and Land Institute, a farmer, and part owner of a healthcare company. A lifelong member of Batesville Presbyterian Church, he was also ordained as and served as a deacon and elder.
Survivors include: son Tom, (Andrea) of Olive Branch; daughter, Elesha G. Tucker (Troy) of Lubbock, Texas; son, Garth Gladney of Hernando; sister, Charlayne G. Lamb (Richard) of Batesville and three grandchildren include Mary Morgan Gladney, Ellie Tucker, and Austen Tucker.
Memorials may be made to Batesville Presbyterian Church, 121 Eureka St, Batesville, MS, 38606.
CRENSHAW–Raashad Stokes, 25, died Monday, December 23, 2013, at her residence.
Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph M.B. Church in Crenshaw. Pastor Prez Jackson will officiate. Burial will be in Longtown Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary.
Stokes, born Sept. 8, 1988, in Sardis, to Joe Jeffries and Shirley Jeffries, both of Crenshaw, was a member of Pleasant Grove M.B. Church.
Survivors along with her parents include: one son, Jamarion Stokes; one daughter, Miracle Stokes, all of Crenshaw; three brothers, Jonathan Stokes and Jonas Stokes, both of Jackson and Damion Stokes of Crenshaw and two sisters, Sharmelle Stokes and Destiny Jeffries, of Crenshaw.
