Wintry mix brings out county workers

By Rupert Howell
Panola County’s road manager Lygunnah Bean explained Monday that although the county does not have the ability to quickly spread sand and cinders on frozen roadways, salt is sprayed on the county’s bridges as soon as it begins forming.

Contacted after Monday’s board of supervisors meeting in Batesville, Bean said 40 50-pound sacks of salt were distributed over the county’s bridges Saturday night. “We were out until 2:30 (a.m.),” he said, assuring that a plan was in place for inclement weather and crews were working on both ends of the county.

“We can’t put it out while it’s raining. It will just wash off,” Bean said of the salt. He explained once ice starts forming or falling the salt becomes effective.

The county does not have facilities to store sand and cinders so it remains dry so it can be distributed on the road and bridge surfaces.

He also reported only one serious wreck was reported to him on county roads, Curtis Road, during the night.

County workers assisted ambulance personnel with getting the victim from under the car, Bean said.
