Eddie Clarence Brewer

    BATESVILLE – Mr. Eddie Clarence Brewer, 67, died Thursday, August 15, 2013, at his home on Harmon Road.

    Services were held Saturday, August 17, at Dickins Funeral Home with burial in Forrest Memorial Cemetery.  Michael Bates officiated. Dickins Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

    Mr. Brewer was born October 5, 1945, in Panola County to the late Clarence Alexander Brewer and Edna Mable Fletcher Brewer.  He attended the Batesville Church of Christ and was a veteran of the United States Navy, he was also a farmer and retired mill wright.

    Survivors include his wife, Kathy Gordon Brewer of Batesville; two daughters, Angela Barnett (Tim) and Karon Tutor (Bill), both of Courtland; three sisters, Loretta Butler of Sardis, Joan O’Neal of Batesville and Janet Howell of Memphis; two brothers, Bobby Brewer and Larry Brewer, both of Batesville; and four grandchildren, Madeline, Blake, Jake and Peyton.

Jessie W. “Bud” Bright

BATESVILLE — Jessie W. “Bud” Bright, 82, died Tuesday, August 20, 2013, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center.

Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Andy Brasher and Rev. Clay Baker officiating. Burial will be in Forrest Memorial Cemetery. Dickins Funeral Home has charge.

Bright, born May 9, 1931, to the late Hugh M. Bright and Maggie Mae Land Bright, was a member of North Batesville Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was preceded in death by one son, Ralph Turner Jr.

Survivors include: his wife, Mary Alice Goodwin Bright; two daughters, Barbara Lynn Bennett and Tammy Lynn Dettor, both of Batesville; one son, Jamie Wade Bright of Batesville and seven grandchildren.

Larry Donnell Burton

SENATOBIA — Larry Donnell Burton, 40, died Saturday, August 17, 2013, at his residence.
Services will be held at noon Saturday at Independence Tyro Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Felix Cauthen Funeral Home has charge.

Burton was a truck driver.

Survivors include: his wife, Yashica Malone of Walls; four sons, Quinson Malone and Corey Lamar, both of Senatobia, Justin Malone of Walls and Dedric Davis of Como; eight sisters, LaNita Cook, LaAlice Edwards, Sherika Williams and Christina Griffins, all of Memphis, Sharon Malone, Pam Malone, Tokereitha Freeman, Mary S. Freeman, all of Senatobia; four brothers, Travis Freeman of Senatobia, Walter Freeman, Mack Freeman Jr. and Marco Freeman, all of Como and Micheal Pratcher of Memphis.

Martha Carolyn Collier

BATESVILLE– Martha Carolyn Collier, 82, died Tuesday, August 20, 2013, at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo.

Services were held Thursday at Dickins Funeral Home. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Funeral Home. Rev. Frank Davis and Rev. Charles Reed officiated. Dickins Funeral Home had charge.

Collier, born June 18, 1931, in Memphis, to the late David Judson Williford and Martha Howell Mitchell, was a member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church and the Batesville Lion’s Club for over 25 years. She served in the VFW Auxiliary.

Survivors include: her husband, Doyle Collier of Batesville; one daughter, Lisa Collier Lewis of Collierville; one son, Robert K. Collier of Batesville; one sister, Mary Elizabeth Baker of   Germantown and one grandchild.

Marie Land

BATESVILLE– Marie Rapp Land, 75, died Monday, August 19, 2013 at her home.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, August 24 at Forest Hill South in Memphis with visitation Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. Burial will be in Forest Hill South Cemetery. Forest Hill Funeral Home has charge.

Mrs. Land was a member of First Baptist Church of Batesville.

She leaves her husband of 59 years, W.P. Land, Jr.; two daughters: Rebecca land Gilbert of Southaven  and Deborah Land Calvery of Senatobia; one son, Edward C. Land of Batesville one sister, Betty Cole of Jackson, Tenn.; three brothers: Fredderick Rapp of Sardis, Ernest Rapp of New Albany and James Rapp Sr. of Memphis; eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. The family requests that memorials are sent to: St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Kerence Bernard Sandridge

COMO – Kerence Bernard Sandridge, 40, died Friday, August 16, 2013, at Desoto Baptist Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held Friday, August 23, at noon at West Side Church of Christ in Como. Felix Cauthen Funeral Home has charge.

Survivors include his wife Shelia Rena Mills Sandridge of Como; one daughter, Lauren Bowdery of Senatobia; three sons, Kordana Sandridge of Senatobia, Kameron Sandridge and Martinez Cummings, both of Como; two sisters, Joann Booker and Barbara Todd, both of Coldwater and three brothers, Kedreck Sandridge and Kirk Sandridge, both of Coldwater and Kendall Sandridge of Little Rock, Ark.

Virgie Lee Scruggs

BATESVILLE — Virgie Lee Scruggs, 78, died Wednesday, August 21, 2013, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.

Services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home. Burial will be in Forrest Memorial Cemetery. Wells Funeral Home has charge.

Scruggs, born Dec. 23, 1932, to Lottie Leona Perkins and Virgil Augustus Bay, was a member of Cold Springs United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmie Scruggs.

Survivors include: her daughter, Sylvia Scruggs Sartin of Sardis; one son, Tim Scruggs of Sardis; her brother, Jim Bay of Batesville; five grandchildren, Dustin Sartin, Patty Lewellen, Aden Toner, Dakota Pierce, Nevada Pierce; four great grandchildren, Johnathan Sartin, Tyler McGregory, Megan Still and Robert Pierce.

William Smith Sarter

OXFORD– William Smith Sartor, 84, died Monday, August 19, 2013, at Baptist Memorial Hospital North Mississippi.

Services were held on Wednesday at First Baptist Church with Rev. Robert Allen officiating. Burial was in Center Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Hamilton. Waller Funeral Home had charge.

Mr. Sartor was a veteran of the United States Army and served as a Private 1st Class as a medical technician. He was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church, Gideons International, American Legion, Grand Lodge of Mississippi, Free and Accepted Masons and Phi Delta Kappa International (an honorary educational society). Mr. Sartor was a retired principal first serving at Hamilton High School and Natchez High School before retiring from Marks Junior High School.

Survivors include his wife, Betsy Emerson Sartor of Oxford; two daughters, Harriet Gorove of Oxford,  and Beth James of Mary Esther, Fla.; one son, William S. Sartor, Jr. and his wife, Rebecca of Mooreville; one sister, Irene Kennon of Atlanta; one brother, Ray Sartor of Ripley; and six grandchildren.

Jerry Wayne Winningham

BATESVILLE — Jerry Wayne Winningham, 64, died Wednesday, August 14, 2013, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.

Graveside services were held Friday, August 16 at Batesville Magnolia Cemetery. Rev. Jeff Tanksley officiated. Dickins Funeral Home had charge.

Winningham, born Dec. 19, 1948, to the late Carl William Winningham and Mattie Katherine Dees Winningham, was a member of Enid Lake Church.

Survivors include: one sister, Brenda Kay Goodwin and her husband Albert of Pope.
