Nelle Fletcher

BATESVILLE — Former long-time editor and publisher of The Southern Reporter, Nelle Fletcher, 84, died Friday, August 9, 2013, at Baptist-DeSoto Hospital.

Funeral services were Monday, August 12, at Sardis United Methodist Church. Rev. Charlie Simmons officiated. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery in Sardis. Ray-Nowell Funeral Home had charge.

She was born on October 19, 1928 in Pontotoc, to the late Charles J. Campbell and Vera Lyon Campbell. She attended Mississippi College in Clinton and was the cover-girl and the student magazine.

She was active in many activities for the benefit of Sardis, including working on the first community birthday calendar, a girl scout leader and cub scout leader. She was also an instructor for the American Red Cross. Born a Baptist she joined the Methodist Church with her new husband and was active in the church including being a Sunday School teacher.

While working on the newspaper, she pushed the positive for the town and community and wrote a very popular column, Nelle’s Notes. With Joe serving as President of the Mississippi Press Association, she worked by his side in the association

She was a resident at Fairfield Assisted Care facility in Batesville.

 She was preceded in death by a son, Albert Ernest “Ernie” Fletcher III, and her brother, Charles J. Campbell Jr.

Nelle is survived by a sister, Frances (S.L.) Alman of Pelahatchie; a son, Joseph Crisler “Cris” Fletcher (Debbie) of Sardis; two daughters, Julia Ellen F. Herl of Tupelo and Vera Aline F. Brock (Dan), of Batesville; 10 grandchildren, Michael Ernest Fletcher, Joseph Guy Fletcher and Wendy Rene’ Fletcher McPhearson, all of Mobile, Ala., Joseph Crisler (Joey) Fletcher, Jr. (Priscilla) of Madison, MS and Vaughan Handel Fletcher of Sardis; Charles Daniel Brock and Lauren Michelle Brock, both of Batesville; Amanda Herl McCormick of Strayhorn, MS, David Alan Herl and Misty Taylor Herl, both of Tupelo and 11 great-grandchildren.

Nancy Lee Harris Holmes

BATESVILLE–Nancy Holmes, 85, died Wednesday, August 7, 2013.

She was born October 4, 1928, in Memphis to William Bledsoe Harris and Ada Lee Cocke Harris and had been a resident of Batesville since 1968.

She was a graduate of Central High School in Memphis and attended the University of Mississippi. She was a member of the Friends of the Library and Batesville Woman’s Club, a past member of the Batesville Garden Club, and a member of the Batesville First Baptist Church.

Survivors include: one son, Tommy, and his wife, Emily, of Virginia Beach, Va.; a daughter, Candace Hopper, and her husband, Kenny, of Batesville; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren: Heath and Varina Hopper and their daughter, Samara, of Hernando; Leslie Swain and her husband, Wes, and their children, Cohen and Hayes, of Lafayette, La; Sean Holmes and his wife, Whitney, of Oxford; and Erin Holmes of Madison, Wis.

Her husband, T.B. Holmes, son, Henry “Hank” Holmes, both of Batesville preceded her in death.

Hubert Joyner

Crenshaw Assistant Fire Chief, Hubert Joyner, 56, died Thursday, August 8, 2013.

He is survived by his wife, Celeste Joyner.

Joseph Earlton Paslay Sr.

OXFORD — Joseph Earlton Paslay Sr., 79, formerly of Como, died Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at Baptist Memorial Hospital – North Mississippi.

 Services were held on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at College Hill Presbyterian Church with Rev. Alan Cochet officiating. Waller Funeral Home had charge.

Born in Como, to the late Dr. Byron Hicklin and Etta DeCell Paslay, Mr. Paslay retired as director from Camp Lake Stephens in Oxford. He was a former camp director at Castalian Springs in Durant, and State Director of the Missisippi YMCA. He was a member of College Hill Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder and was a veteran of the United States Army.
 
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jean Wall Paslay of Oxford; two daughters, Wendy Paslay of Oxford and Aki Hashimoto of Chester, England; two sons, Joe E. Paslay, Jr. of Norman, Okla. and Clay Paslay of Oxford and six grandchildren.
