A Crenshaw man who serves as that town’s assistant fire chief is still in critical condition at the Med in Memphis according to Crenshaw Fire Chief Lee Duncan who had visited the Med Wednesday evening and talked with family again Thursday.
A falling roof and wall injured Hubert Joyner at the We Care Community day care located in the former theater in downtown Crenshaw.
Panola County Emergency Management Director Daniel Cole said the center is used as a gathering place for seniors where they receive meals, fellowship and respite from heat.
Workers heard a creaking noise in the roof on Monday shortly before noon and moved occupants to front of the building.
The area was under a deluge as rains swept through the area dropping a lot of water in a short period of time, Cole said.
Additional noise caused workers to move the group outside of the building, Cole noted, and said Joyner, who drives for the center, had pulled the company van alongside the building when a six foot section of cinder block wall fell on him and the van.
Joyner suffered broken bones as well as suffering additional problems during his stay at the Med, according to officials.
Meanwhile in Crenshaw the building has been taped off and with Cole stating that it will surely be condemned after the accident site is released by the insurance company.
“More than two-thirds of the roof caved in,” Cole said.
