Ricky Keen, 201 Birch St., Batesville, entered a guilty plea to petit larceny after first entering a not guilty. He was charged for taking a copy machine from Crawford Business Products.

Crawford’s Business Supply employee, Michael Weldon testified that the copy machine was sitting behind their office for a few weeks. Weldon told the judge they usually use what parts they can and salvage the rest.

Weldon said that after he saw a brown extended cab truck loading up the copier around 9:15 p.m. on September 16, they called the police and Martin Brothers.

Detective Tommy Crutcher testified that a deputy held the defendants, Ricky Keen and Andy Hyland until they could get there.

Andy Hyland, 238 Dogwood Lane, Batesville, had previously pleaded guilty to the charge of petit larceny in the same incident.

Photos in the evidence file showed the copy machine in the back of Hyland’s truck at Martin Brothers.

Keen testified that he and his cousin Hyland did have a copy machine but it was from behind Sullivan’s and they had permission to take items for salvage.

The judge showed Crawford employee Weldon and  company president Victor McCrory the serial number of the copy machine in the photo and it matched company records.

Keen testified, “First of all, Crutcher wasn’t even there.”

Though there was video footage of the copy machine taken to Martin Brothers, it was too dark to make out who the people were taking the machine.

Judge McKenzie told Keen, “I don’t want to find an innocent man guilty. Let’s subpeona Hyland so he can testify who was with him. Can you be back next Wednesday?” McKenzie asked.

Keen hesitated and said, “Sure.”

Keen left the court room then spoke with Crutcher. He re-entered the courtroom and said, “I will just plead guilty, he (Hyland) is on probation and we need to work.”
Keen was fined $335 due in 30 days.

Arlisa Petty, 12871-B Ballentine, Sardis, was found guilty of accessory before the fact of shoplifting and was fined $633.
