In a back-and-forth game, South Panola slowpitch edged Independence 17-16 in an extra inning Thursday night for the upset.

A tie at 16 at the end of regulation, it forced an eighth inning showdown where the Lady Tigers held Independence scoreless to end their perfect 6-0 record.

Lady Tiger Rebekah Garner drew a walk to start the eighth. Courtesy runner Megan McGee ran the bases for Garner. Haley Reid singled, advancing McGee to second. The next batter hit a pop fly to right to pick up the first out, advancing McGee and Reid.

With two outs and two on base, Chresha Brown singled  to drive home McGee for the winning run.

The Lady Tigers had nine hits, seven errors and left 10 on base while the Lady Cats had seven hits, four errors and left nine on base.

Scoring three runs each were Reid, Sydney Morgan and Garner. Chloe Morgan added two runs. Scoring one run each were Caitlin Seay, Chresha Brown, Morgan Aldison, Savanna Williams, Misty Jenkins and Caitlyn Cox.

Lady Tiger head coach Kim Wilson said she was proud for the win but the team had way too many errors.

“They’ve got to come out here and bow up in the first inning,” she said. “They’re not going to beat people 17-16 very many times. Somebody that scores 16 runs on you, nine times out of ten they’re going to beat your brains in.

“I didn’t see to many hits but we got some,” Wilson added.  “We’ve got a lot to do with district games coming up.”
The Tigers will be back in action tonight hosting Columbus in a district doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
