SP Tigers prepare for Gulfport

By Angie Ledbetter

The South Panola Tigers eye their upset nemesis from last year, Gulfport, who comes to town tonight.

South Panola dropped to No. 4 in the Clarion-Ledger Super 10 Poll Monday, but are not looking back to the Hoover game. All eyes are on Gulfport who defeated the Tigers 13-4 last year.

The Admirals will take a five hour bus ride north today with a 1-1 record. They opened the season with Pascagoula defeating them  23-10 and then defeated Moss Point 53-10 before their bye week last Friday.

According to Head Coach Lance Pogue the game with Moss Point was a good win for the Admirals because they regained some confidence.

“They had a lot of seniors that graduated but a typical Gulfport team will run the ball and not make any mistakes. They’re a solid defensive team but they’re not the type of team that we’ve played in the two previous games. But that doesn’t matter because we have a home game and a chance to win a game to get to 2-1.”

“Our focus is just trying to find a way to get a win and get our confidence back. The Hoover game hurt our pride a little bit because we thought we were ready to go and had good intentions and things turned sour so we can’t wait to get back on the field again.”

Head Coach Mike Justice is in his fifth season and has a team that consists of 22 seniors and 23 juniors.

One solid player the Admirals will be depending on with is senior quarterback Chandler Malley who is 6’0”, 200 pounds.

“Malley is a solid quarterback who doesn’t really make any mistakes. He’s a senior leader who’s very impressive.”

The running back will be returning also. Christian Williams is a 5-9,210 senior.

“He played last year and a big guy who we think is a good player.”

But the number one guy the Admirals will be depending upon will be junior wide receiver Jevon Floyd who is 5-11,170.

“He’s a nice looking player and they throw the ball to him a bunch especially when they’re trying to make a big play.  Floyd is their kind of big play guy and has been their first two games.”

Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
