Alice W. “Patty” Hankins

BATESVILLE — Alice W. “Patty” Hankins,  76, died Tuesday, May 22, 2012, at  Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.

Services will be held Saturday, June 2, at 11 a.m. at Second Concord M.B. Church in Batesville with interment in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary and Saturday from 10 a.m. until services at the church. Pastor Joseph Wilson officiating. Cooley’s Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Hankins was born June 14, 1935 in Sardis, to Earnest Black and Beatrice Wilson. She was a retired cook for ICS Headstart and member of Second Concord M.B. Church.

Survivors include her husband, Rogers Hankins, of Batesville; eight daughters, Terrie Knight of Pearl, Glinda Jones of Palm Bay, Fla., Vickie Locke of Daphane, Ala., Vivian Hankins of Tucker, Ga., Shirley Ann Kuykendall of Oakland, Calif., Rosemary Jenkins, Earnestine Hankins and Aurdey Hankins, all of Batesville; three sons, Eddie Calvin Hankins of Kileen, Texas, Floyd Hankins of Phoenix  and Kenneth Hankins of Batesville; one sister, Billie Jean Wilson of Chicago; five brothers, Clinton Wilson of Chicago, Clyde Wilson of Park Forest, Ill., Carl Wilson, Curtis Wilson and Willie Ed Wilson, all of Memphis; 18 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Sam Doyle Horton

BATESVILLE —    Sam Doyle Horton, 51, died Sunday, May 27, 2012 at the Hosanna Family Worship Center in Pope.

   Memorial services were held Thursday at the Hosanna Family Worship Center with Rev. Rayford Ables officiating. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

    Horton was born May 29, 1960 in Barstow, Calif. to Edward Major Horton and Mary Baudizzoni Horton. He was a LPN and a member of the Hosanna Family Worship Center.

    Survivors include his daughter, Cassie Horton Conner of Oxford; one son, Kelvin Owens of Abbeville; his sister, Regina Hall

of Bakersfield, Calif.; six brothers, Charles Horton of Bakersfield, Calif., David Workman of Kingman, Ariz., Bill Workman of Florida, Edward Horton and Daniel Horton, both of Batesville and Rick Horton of Cato, Okla.; and five grandchildren.

Joan Goodson Market

BATESVILLE — Joan Goodson Market, 45, died Saturday, May 26, 2012, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.

Services were held Thursday at Cooley’s Mortuary Chapel with interment in West Camp Cemetery in Batesville. Minister Michael Cathey officiated. Cooley’s Mortuary had charge.

Market was born December 5, 1966, in Bridgeton, N.J., to Clarence Goodson and Mildred C. Smith. She was a domestic worker and member of Church of God In Christ.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Lee Market of Batesville; five sisters, Dean Bobo of Batesville, Jane B. Bradley of Senatobia, Dale Nash of Memphis, Judy Reid of Lindenworld, N.J. and Rachel McKee of Murfreesboro, Tenn. and three brothers, Darrell L. Goodson of Batesville, William K. Goodson of Southaven and Alexander Smith of Murfreesboro, Tenn.

Odis Sanford Sanders

OXFORD — Odis Sanford Sanders, 85, widower of Nancy Sanders, died Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at the  Veterans Home in Oxford.

Services will be held on Saturday at noon at Sardis Lake Baptist Church with Rev. Kevin Crofford officiating.  Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until service time. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Sanders, born on July 6, 1926, in Covington, Tenn. to John C. and Edna Dodson Sanders, was a WWII US Navy Veteran having served in the South Pacific. He worked for Firestone for 30 years in  Memphis.  He was a member of the Sardis Lake Baptist Church.  He was a 32nd degree Mason and an officer in the Frayser Recreational Association. He coached little league baseball for over 20 years in Frayser.  He was inducted into the  Memphis Park Commission Hall of Fame.

Survivors include: his daughter, Alice Tillie of Pope, and his son, Fred Sanders also of Pope; two sisters, Helen Brown and  Mable Parks, both of Millington, Tenn. and 2 brothers, Junior Sanders of Millington and Doug Sanders of Bartlett, Tenn.,  11 grandchildren  and 21 great-grandchildren.

James Tate Scott Jr.

BATESVILLE —    James Tate Scott Jr., 80, died Saturday, May 26, 2012, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.

Memorial services were held Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church in Batesville. Rev. Pat Ludlam and Rev. Ed Woodall officiated. Wells Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Scott was born March 29, 1932 in Batesville, to James Tate Scott Sr. and Laura Profilet Scott. He was a retired self-employed furniture merchant and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Batesville.

    Survivors include two daughters, Kelly Scott of Oxford and Kimberly Scott Ratliff of Atascadero, Calif.; two sons, James Tate “Jim” Scott III of Oxford and Jory Emile Scott of Taylorsville; two sisters, Mary Ann Scott Lacy of El Dorado, Ark. and Melanie Scott Yelton of Batesville; and seven grandchildren.

Zula Mae Towery

CRENSHAW–    Zula Mae Towery, 92, died Thursday, May 24, 2012, at her residence.

Services were held Monday at Crenshaw Baptist Church. Burial was in Marks Cemetery. Rev. Kevin Robinson officiated. Kimbro Funeral Home had charge.

Towery, born June 28, 1919, in Lafayette County, to the late Jennie Harrison and John Taylor Bratton, was a member of Crenshaw Baptist Church. She was a retired hairdresser.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie Irvin Towery.

Survivors include: two sons, Jim Towery of Cookeville, Tenn. and John Towery of Crenshaw; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Eddie Joe Waldrup

POPE – Eddie Joe Waldrup, 65, died Monday, May 28, 2012, at the Kindred Healthcare Primacy in Memphis.

Services were held on Wednesday, May 30, at Wells Funeral Home Chapel with interment in Magnolia Cemetery. Rev. David L. Newton officiated.  Wells Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Waldrup was born to Taylor Joe and Ruby Roberson Waldrup in Batesville, on May 27, 1947. He was a member of the Pope United Methodist Church. Mr. Waldrup was the Comptroller for 25 years for the Memphis Catholic Diocese.

He was survived by his brother, Phil Waldrup and wife, Anne, of Pope.
