Sheriff says weekend was burglary free

By Billy Davis

Panola County reported a quiet weekend after a flurry of burglaries last week, said Sheriff Dennis Darby.

Darby said sheriff’s dispatchers did not field phone calls of burglaries although residents called in reports of suspicious activity.

The sheriff last week was alerting Panola Countians to be on alert after thieves struck 14 homes in four days.

The Panolian published a partial list of stolen items that included firearms, flat-screen TVs, and game consoles.

No arrests have been made although some suspects have been questioned.

The sheriff’s department is asking for tips through the Crime Stoppers Program and Darby said Monday the department is following up on tips that have trickled in.

Darby said the burglars are likely drug users who are stealing and selling goods for drug money.

“We’ve rounded up the usual dope heads and talked to them, and we’re watching them close,” Darby said. “Right now there is nothing solid yet.”
