Shootings at Greenhill triggered false reports elsewhere in county

Panola County Sheriff Dennis Darby said that two people were slightly injured early Friday evening in what appeared to be a drive-by shooting at Greenhill Subdivision in Sardis.

“They shot through the windshield, hit one in the leg, not serious,” Darby said. The other victim was slightly grazed. One was taken by ambulance for medical treatment; the other transported by private vehicle. Law enforcement officials were searching for two suspects, he added.

The Greenhill shootings have spawned rumors of shootings at other locations in the county. No other shootings had occurred as of 9 p.m. Friday, the sheriff said. The Batesville Police Department had investigated a report of shots fired on Tubbs Road early Friday evening but were unable to substantiate the report when officers went to investigate, Darby added.

Darby said that officers investigating reports of threatened revenge following Monday’s shooting on Vance Street in Batesville that fatally wounded Jeremiah Wright have been finding cooperation from the public that is helping to identify suspects. “There have been a lot of threats and false information,” Darby said, mostly prefaced by the statement: “They’re coming …”

“We’re going after them,” the sheriff said. “It may take a little while, (but) we’re going to start charging when they give us false information.

The criminal activity has prompted the meeting of a group of local pastors plans Saturday at Mt. Gillion Baptist Church on Terza Road at 9 a.m. Willie Butler of the Pastors and Ministers Fellowship extended an invitation to church leaders from all denominations to attend the meeting and discuss solutions to escalating crime
