Pope Basketball vs Charleston

Pope and Charleston went 1-1-1 in basketball action Monday night.
The seventh grade Pope boys lost 15-11. They were down 11-1 at halftime.
The young Bulldogs got the ball on their side of the court all night long, but had trouble making shots.
In the second half, Steven Collins paced the Bulldogs with four points. He scored the only point in the first half.
Adding two points each were Jeremy Magee, Draper Hughes and Ryan McCurdy.
8th Grade Girls
The eighth grade Lady Bulldogs came out on a mission for a win, but the game ended in a 12-12 tie when Charleston hit a three-pointer with three seconds left in the game.
The coaches decided not to play overtime.
Pope took a 6-4 lead into halftime. Both teams scored two points in the third quarter.
Pope led through most of the fourth quarter as Charleston chipped away to tie the game at 10 with 3:20 left. Pope went ahead 12-10 on a Madison Morgan steal and field goal.
The Lady Bulldogs were able to keep Charleston away from low post and for the first time that night, Charleston had a three-pointer hit its mark.
Morgan and Breanna Chapman led the Lady Bulldogs with four points each, followed by Lea Todd Ware and Qyara Love with two points each.
8th Grade Boys
The eighth grade Bulldogs held off a late surge by Charleston to go 5-1 on the season with a 21-20 win.
Pope made it through the first quarter, 6-2, all six points made by Jonathan McMurry.
At the half, the Bulldogs maintained a 10-7 lead and led 17-14 at the end of the third after both teams scored seven points.
Charleston took the 20-19 lead with 25 seconds left in the game. Stevon Hill was fouled and hit the front end of a one-and-one to tie the game at 20 with 11 seconds left.
After a Charleston timeout and foul, McMurry also hit the front end of a one-and-one to go ahead 21-20 with eight seconds left in the game.
Hill intercepted the inbound pass and played keep away as game time ticked away.
McMurry led the Bulldogs with nine points, followed by Demetrius Market with five. Hill and Stacy Chapman rounded out the scoring with four and three points, respectively.
Pope will play its last two games of the season against Batesville Jr. High. The schedule has been changed. Batesville will host Pope on Thursday, January 19 at 5 p.m. and Pope will host Batesville Tuesday, January 24 at 5 p.m.
