ND ladies thump Carroll

After defeating fourth ranked Oak Hill five days ago, one would think the North Delta girls basketball team would suffer somewhat of a let down going into Friday night’s district battle against Carroll Academy.

Led by Laci DuBravec’s 15 points, the Lady Green Wave made quick work of the visiting Lady Rebels by jumping to a 16-6 first quarter lead before cruising to a 51-23 thumping. With the victory North Delta improved to 2-1 in district play and 12-6 overall while Carroll fell to 4-8 on the season.

Bradi Beard gave the Lady Wave a quick 9-1 lead with a three-pointer from the right corner. DuBravec then popped the first of her three first half trey’s for a 16-4 Wave lead. North Delta then out scored Carroll 16-2 in the second quarter on consecutive three-pointers by DuBravec to take a commanding 32-8 lead at intermission.

DuBravec also contributed with six rebounds and four steals on the night. Beard followed with nine points, six rebounds and dished five assists as a total of 11 North Delta players got into the scoring column. Charla Shea Darby added eight points while Hastings Neal chipped in with four. Other scorers included Katelyn Still with three points and five assists, Callie Masterson registered three points and five steals. Jordan Pullen, Julianna Morrow, Hanna Greenlee, Hannah Waldrip and Liz Roarke all had two points. Claire Gant finished with one point.

North Delta turned the ball over only eight times and was 15-of-24 from the free throw line.

In the nightcap, Carroll connected on 10 three-pointers to break open a close game early in the fourth quarter to take a 74-53 win over the North Delta boys. The Rebels had three players in double figures as Breland Marett led all scorers with 19 points. Trey Taylor and Payton Banes added 18 and 17 points each for Carroll as the visitors finished out the game on an 11-1 run in the last 3:04 of the contest.

North Delta (0-8; 0-3) closed a 54-44 margin to eight points on Sam Copeland’s basket with 5:31 left in the game. That would be as close as North Delta would get as Hayden Harrell and Marett drained back-to-back three pointers to give the Rebels a 60-46 lead.

Renic Greenlee led the Green Wave with 16 points. Colby Pirtle followed with nine points while Hunt Howell added eight. Jonathan Mackey, Tylor Lee and William Rayborn registered four points. Zack Inman and Luke Williams had three points while Copeland finished with two points.

Both North Delta teams will take part in the Magnolia Heights Holiday tournament December 28-30 in Senatobia. The North Delta girls will open the tournament Wednesday morning at 10:30 against Hernando.
