Unpaid fines bring jail time for defendants in city court

Several defendants were sentenced to jail for non payment of old fines during Batesville Municipal Court Wednesday.

Judge Jay Westfaul told each defendant they could be released from jail once they paid their old fines.

Jonathan Keen, 2344 Sardis Lake, Batesville, was sentenced to 19 days in jail for old fines of $739 that have been due since August 10. He had a case for simple assault dismissed after the affiant failed to appear to prosecute.

Edward Houston, 216 Panola, Batesville, was sentenced to 23 days in jail for old fines of $934 that have been due since December 2008.

Michael Brassell, 470 Tubbs, Batesville, was sentenced to 34 days in jail for having old fines of $1,635 that have been due since January 2011.

Leslie A. Shields, 238 Pearson, Batesville, was fined $647 for driving while license suspended.

Mondarious Armstead, 4238 Curtis Rd., Batesville, failed to appear to answer possession of marijuana and old fines of $789 that have been due since June 2011.

Jessica Shivers, 599 Tatum Pond, Tillatoba, was fined $964 for no proof of insurance and driving while license suspended. She entered a not guilty plea to leaving the scene of an accident. A trial was set for
December 14.

Kourtney Blandford, 422 Hickory Hill, Batesville, had a charge of simple possession of controlled substance remanded to the files.

Freddie Harris, 1288 Firetower, Crenshaw, had a lawyer appointed for DUI-second and entered guilty pleas to resisting arrest, reckless driving and failure to stop when officer signals.

Patricia Storey, 38 CR 510 Como, had a case for DUI and no driver’s license continued.

James Williams, Lawrence Bro., Batesville, had a trial set for December 14 after entering a not guilty plea to DUI-second and no driver’s license.

Recardis Bland, 478 Teasdale, Enid, had a case continued for possession of controlled substance with intent to sell.

Cases set for trial

Nicholas Warren, 201 Vick St., Batesville, entered a guilty plea to DUI. He was fined $770.

Barbara Hamilton, 105 Lester St., Batesville, was found guilty in her absence of simple assault and fined $305 after Affiant Lorcie Holmes testified.

James Scott, CR 521, Como, was represented by attorney David Walker  for two counts of possession of controlled substance.

The city’s prosecuting attorney Bob Morris and Walker agreed the charges will be held for six months if Scott stays away from school property. He was charged $420 in court costs.

Lekedrick A. Flowers, 8492 Hwy. 35 South, Batesville, was fined $146 for speeding and had a no proof of insurance ticket continued.

Nakita L. Gibbs, 510 Wayne St., Sumner, was fined $194 for no proof of insurance.

William E. Doyle Jr., 1790 Cotton Plant, Batesville, was fined $435 for speeding and no proof of insurance.

Raymond Radcliff, 62 Manning Dr., Oakland, had a handicap parking ticket dismissed after having showing proof of a valid placard.

Charles I. Corley, 138 Greenbriar Circle, Courtland, entered a not guilty plea to careless driving. A trial was set for December 7.

Shelby L. Sawyer, 12523-B Hwy. 6, Batesville, was fined $145 for improper passing.

Stephanie Q. Reed, 117 Jackson St., Batesville, was fined $1,697 for speeding, no proof of insurance and driving while license suspended.
