Police seeks public help to ID suspect

By Billy Davis

It’s like the classic Chi-Lites song: Have you seen her, Tell me have you seen her.

Batesville police are hoping the Crime Stoppers program will help them identify a woman arrested for shoplifting who apparently stole a name, too.

The mystery woman used the name of a Batesville woman, Janine Shanae Butler, and the stolen identity was not discovered until the woman had posted bail.

“I want people to look at her picture. We want to find her,” said BPD Detective George Williford, referring to the mug shot of the woman.

Williford could not say for sure how the alleged shoplifter used Janine Butler’s name but noted that Mrs. Butler’s purse had been stolen from her automobile in 2010.

“Mrs. Butler is very upset about this,” said Williford. “We are trying to clear her name and also catch the person who used her name.”

The North Central Miss. Crime Stoppers phone number is 1-800-729-2169.

People who call Crime Stoppers do not have to give their name. The caller is given an identification number.

If the information leads to an arrest, the person providing the information will receive a cash reward through the assigned identification number.
