Summer means training time for teams

As schools have dismissed for the summer, the sports world does not always get that break.

The football teams, who plan to be in the running for the playoffs next year, are in the weight room following spring practice.

The basketball teams are planning for some summer camps. At North Panola, the parents raised the money for the players to go to camp. That’s the way to do it. Parental involvement is the key.

Well, North Panola football has a head coach in Robert Hunter but there seems to be a power struggle going on up there. We can only hope it will be straightened out and the players will be in a position to compete this fall.

There is a lot of talent out there and those players are not showcasing what they can do to the fullest.

North Delta’s football coach Dan Werner is a little concerned about the three 3A football teams it faces of the first four games of the season. He is not too crazy about the open date at the end of the season either.

The team lost 13 seniors off its 29-member squad. According to my calculations, there are three returning starters on the offensive line and a couple of other juniors who got a lot of playing time behind the graduating seniors.

As for the national championship South Panola team, we are just waiting to see who will slip into the slots vacated by the seniors. The one thing about the South Panola team is they face the same things as other teams: getting this year’s team ready for a challenging season.

The three Saturday games will give people who have other Friday night obligations a chance to see the Tigers play.

There are also the high school softball teams who are gearing up for the fall season, North Delta fastpitch and South Panola slowpitch. These teams made some noise in their respective districts and will be getting in some training this summer.

Many of the girls play traveling ball to hone their skills even more for high school competition.

Well, community softball and baseball are in full swing and the parks are busy at night.

In doing some research on activities for the summer, it was not easy to find someone giving swimming lesson on a public level. John Kyle State Park’s pool is closed this summer due to damage.

Northwest Community College no longer has a pool.

However, Ole Miss is offering classes for children beginners to those more advanced every day at the Turner Center. Give them a call at (662) 915-5591 (ask for aquatics).

They have four levels for children under 12; White 1 for beginners; White 2; Red and Blue. For instance, White 1 in the month of June will take classes Monday through Thursday, 4-4:45 p.m. White 2 will take classes 5-5:45 p.m. those same days.

Blue classes in the month of June will be held Monday and Wednesday 4-45 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday, Friday and Sunday, 5-5:45.

Have a good summer.
