Volunteers are needed for the May 7 visit by the Convoy of Hope, especially to help with clothing distribution and food service, a spokesman said.

The Saturday, May 7 arrival of the Convoy of Hope at the Batesville Civic Center will offer, starting at 10 a.m., free food and clothing and a host of services along with family and spiritual counseling if desired.

30 churches involved

It is the project of 30 or more Panola area churches, interdenominational and interracial, which have linked with the international Convoy of Hope organization to mount the massive, one-day relief distribution.

Dr. David Ball of Batesville is liaison to the national Convoy of Hope organization. The event has been in planning for months as more than a dozen committee chairmen worked to coordinate the logistics required. Ball has estimated that participants will receive at no charge food, clothing and other services worth from $300 to $400.

The semi-trailer filled with groceries for free distribution will be met at the Civic Center by hundreds of volunteers who plan to serve an estimated 3,000 needy people during the day.

Free services offered

In addition to the free food and clothing, medical and dental checkups, haircuts, family portraits and Bibles will also be offered at no cost. Representatives from a host of community resources will be on hand to direct people to help for the working poor, the elderly and small children.

Free services include a job fair and help with GED and reading skills. A closely monitored Kids Zone will offer activities for children including carnival games and inflatables, face painting and balloons. Hot dogs, chips and drinks will be served.
