Glynda Merle Taylor Bailey

LAMBERT– Glynda Merle Taylor Bailey, 83, died Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at her residence.

Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Wells Funeral Home. Visitation will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.  Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery. Wells Funeral Home has charge.

Bailey was born May 6, 1927, to the late Jewell N. and Leslie Taylor. As a teenager, she  was the drum major for the Lambert High School Band and competed and won the Tri-State Twirling Competition at Crump Stadium in Memphis.  She married the late Doty Bailey . When he returned home from the Navy after WWII, they made their permanent home on the Bailey farm.

As an adult she studied at the University of Mississippi and attended classes taught by various accomplished artists. She became known throughout the state and other parts of the country for her paintings of local scenes, past and present. Her works were displayed in many homes, including Elvis Presley’s Graceland and the Mississippi Governor’s Mansion. Sharing her knowledge of art, she taught classes at her home for children.

She was a member of Lambert United Methodist Church, the Mississippi Pen Women’s Association, a local Bridge club, and served on the Mississippi Art Commission.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Malcolm Douglas “Doty” Bailey.

Survivors include: two sons, Malcolm D. Bailey Jr., D.D.S. of Clarksdale and John L. Bailey  of Batesville; four grandchildren,  Michael N. Bailey, Elizabeth B. Witt, John Charles Bailey and Christan T. Bailey and three great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Lambert or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis.

Georgia Fay Brister

BATESVILLE– Georgia Fay Brister, 83, died Tuesday, March 22, 2011.

Services were Thursday at Wells Funeral Home. Burial was in Forrest Memorial Park. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Brister, born Oct. 13, 1928, in Crowder, to Henry Bruce and Darnie Dee Hendrix White, was retired from South Central Bell as a billing clerk with 31 years of service. She was a member of Tocowa Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald C. Brister and her son, Donald M. Brister.

Survivors include: one son, David Wayne Brister of Batesville; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

The family requests memorials be made to the Youth Group of Tocowa Baptist Church, 956 Tocowa Rd., Courtland, 38620.

Charlene W. Fonville

COMO– Charlene W. Fonville, 67, died Thursday, March 17, 2011.     

Services will be held Saturday, March 26, at 12 p.m. at Beulah M.B. Church with burial at Beulah Cemetery.  Visitation will be held Friday, from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. at Pate-Jones Funeral Home in Senatobia.  Pate-Jones Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Fonville was born July 15, 1943, in Como, to Mr. Professor Wilbourn and Mrs. Lucy Mae Robinson Wilbourn.  At an early age, Charlene accepted Christ as her personal Savior and joined Beulah Missionary Baptist Church.  There she remained faithful as a Ritualistic Service Usher, choir member, a faithful member of the New Life Sof Singers, and later in life was a great mother on the Mother Board.  Later, she married Mr. Charles Fonville.

Survivors include six daughters, Charlene Fonville II, Jackye Fonville, Carolyn Fonville, Tina Birge, and Shevell, Wilkins, all of Como and Daphane Fonville of Senatobia; five sons, Willie Wilbourn of Senatobia, Eddie Wilbourn, Timmy Melvin, and Dewayne Fonville all of Como; 34 grandchildren; one sister, Rosie A. Tucker; brothers, J.D, Wilbourn and John Wilbourn of Como; 29 grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.

Edwin “Eddie” Jeffery Mathews

SARDIS– Edwin “Eddie” J. Mathews, 45, died Wednesday, March 23, 2011.

Services will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home. Visitation will be held today from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home. Burial will be in Longtown Cemetery.

Mathews, born Jan. 6, 1966, in Sardis, to Gertie O’Conner Mathews of Batesville and the late Donald Mathews, was a member of First United Methodist Church. He was a jailer for the Panola County Sheriff’s Department with 13 years in law enforcement. He served in the United States Navy during the Gulf War.

Survivors along with his mother include: four sons, David Jacob Mathews, Jeremy Mitchell Mathews and Caleb O’Conner Mathews, all of Batesville and Jordan Blake Mathews of Senatobia; one brother, Donald “Bo” Mathews of Batesville and two grandchildren, Gage Rowan Mathews and Chloe Nicole Mathews.

Mildred A. Duncan

BATESVILLE– Mildred A. Duncan, 84, died Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at her residence.

Services will be held today at 11 a.m. at Wells Funeral Home. Rev. Kevin Crofford will officiate. Wells Funeral Home has charge.

Duncan, born Feb. 19, 1927, in Chicago, to Jan P. and Josephine A. Ceczuga Kubraski, worked for Parker Hannifin in the payroll department for 20 years. She recently worked with On Call Staffing in the Human Resources Department. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Community Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis F. Duncan.

Survivors include: one son, John C. Duncan “BJ” of Sardis and two grandchildren.

Mae Agnes Norwood

SARDIS– Mae Agnes Norwood, 83, died Wednesday, March 16, 2011, at her residence.

Services were Tuesday at New Greater Light Baptist Church. Rev. Bobby Walker officiated. Burial was in Mt. Level Cemetery in Como. Kenneth I. Roberson Funeral Home had charge.

Norwood was born to the late Bam and Mahilia Renix. She was a member of New Greater Light Baptist Church in Sardis.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bennie Norwood; two sons, Eddie and Charles Norwood and one daughter, Barbara Renix.

Survivors include: two daughters, Clara Kimmons and Leona Smith; one son, Alvin Norwood, all of Sardis; one sister, Louise Renix of Como; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

John R. Pinkston

BATESVILLE– John R. Pinkston, 66, died Monday, March 21, 2011, at Golden Living Nursing Home.

Services were Wednesday at Wells Funeral Home. Rev. Terrell McGregor officiated. Burial was in Forrest Memorial Park. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Pinkston, born Aug. 2, 1944, in Quitman County, to Harvey Ray and Loys Etoyle Englebert Pinkston, served his country in the National Guard.

Survivors include: three daughters, Cynthia Pinkston McGee of Batesville, Teresa Carol Pinkston Cowen of McGhee, Ark. and Debra Louise Pinkston Lynchard of Greenville; two sisters, Shirley Pinkston Youngblood of Memphis, Sue Pinkston Bradley of Colorado Springs, Colo.; four brothers, Harvey Pinkston and Richard Pinkston, both of Batesville, Michael Pinkston of Anchorage, Alaska and Steve Pinkston of Marks and seven grandchildren.

Mary Joe Kimbriel Story

BATESVILLE– Mary Joe Kimbriel Story, 80, formerly of Clarksdale, died Monday, March 21, 2011, at her residence.

Services were Thursday at National Funeral Home. Burial was in Memorial Gardens Cemetery. National Funeral Home had charge.

Story, born to the late Joe Tom Kimbriel and Lillie Lee Brooks Kimbriel, worked as a teacher’s aide for the Coahoma County Schools. She was a member of the Clarksdale Church of the Nazarene and Oxford Church of the Nazarene.

She was preceded in death by her son, Ricky Story.

Survivors include: her husband, Floyd Story of Batesville and one daughter, Brenda Story Camire of Batesville.

Eddie E. Hensley

COMO– Eddie E. “Gene” Hensley, 78, died Saturday, March 19, 2011, at Tallahatchie General Hospital in Charleston.

Services were held at 4 p.m. on  Tuesday, March 22, at Wells Funeral Home. Rev. Bob Wilcutt officiated.

 Burial was in Forrest Memorial Park. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Hensley was born Oct. 9, 1932, in Ashland, to the late Rufus and Ollie Albertson Hensley.

He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church and was a musician.

Survivors include: companion, Phyllis Byrd of Courtland; one daughter, Rhonda Allen of Norman, Okla.; one son, Steve Hensley of Paragould, Ark.; one sister, Pearline Bailey of Batesville; two brothers, Frank Hensley of Richmond, Texas and Thomas Hensley of Memphis and two grandchildren.

Ernestine Taylor

COURTLAND–Ernestine Taylor, 76, died Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center.

Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Springhill Asa M.B. Church in Courtland. Rev. Lewis Wilson will officiate. Visitation will be held today from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.

Taylor, born Aug. 12, 1935, to the late James Wright and Mabel Rembert, was a homemaker and a member of Springhill Asa M.B. Church.

Survivors include: eight daughters, Vivian Thomas, Deloris Harris, Elizabeth Gilmore, Patricia Rhodes, Barbara Young and Tracy Ford, all of Courtland, Mabelean Anderson of Batesville and Lynetta Henderson of Crowder; six sons, Lawrence Taylor of Batesville,  Reginald Taylor, Willie Eugene Taylor, James Wright Taylor, Gregory L. Taylor and Michael Taylor, all of Courtland; 34 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
