And Tays Hardy is safe? No!! The official called him out in the third inning. That run and another run in the fifth could have conceivably ended the game for South Panola with a win over Lafayette March 12. Both runners were called out at the plate in controversial calls. Instead of South Panola being able to invoke the 10-run mercy rule in the fifth inning, Lafayette scored 15 runs in the sixth to take the lead and the win. Photo submitted

SP to host Tupelo in rematch

By Brad Greer

The South Panola Tigers put their new No.12 baseball ranking to the test Monday as they traveled to  Tupelo to open the Region 2-6A season.

While the Tigers held their own against No. 2-ranked  Tupelo, they could not get on the scoreboard as Tupelo starting pitcher  J. D. Roberts threw a complete game two-hitter while striking out 13 to power Tupelo past the Tigers 4-0.

Mitchel Babb was tagged with the loss on the mound for South Panola, who fell to 8-4 and 0-1 in region play. Babb, (2-2), scattered four hits while fanning six over six innings and collected the only two hits for the Tigers.

Conner Carothers got Tupelo, (10-1; 1-0) on the board with a solo home run in the bottom of the second. The Golden Wave added an unearned run in the following inning then tacked on two more in the fifth for the final margin of victory.

South Panola will host Tupelo tonight starting at 4 p.m. with the junior varsity contest. The Tigers will host Grenada Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
