The North Delta baseball players face opposing pitchers with an aggressive stance but still have trouble at the plate.
In an all-important district series with Marshall last week, which was shuffled due to rain, the Green Wave fell 2-1.
The first game was slated for last Tuesday but was postponed to Friday. After a five-day rest, the Green Wave took the first game of the series 5-2 at Marshall Academy Thursday.
Jim Tom Copeland got the win, allowing three hits.
Ethan Taylor took the loss for the second game, allowing eight hits.
Senior third baseman Austin Gant hit a two-run homer for the Green Wave in top of the sixth.
Instead of having a day’s rest between games, North Delta (5-4 overall, 2-4 district) was back on the field Friday night in a game that lasted two and a half hours.
Luke Latham took the loss, pitching 5.2 innings, as the Green Wave fell 8-3. Latham gave up five hits, seven runs and three walks. He had six strikeouts.
Senior center fielder Michael Magee was the bright spot for the offense as he slammed a two-run homer over right center to score John Cody Dalrymple who had singled to get on base and stole second.
North Delta led 2-1 through the third. Marshall loaded the bases in the fourth on two hit batters and a walk and went ahead when the outfielder failed to secure the sacrifice fly and scored two runners.
North Delta’s last run came in the seventh. Gant walked to get on base and scored on a Latham single to center field.
The Green Wave had the bases loaded with two out, but the last out was a strikeout that ended the game.
North Delta was scheduled to play in the Clarksdale Lee tournament yesterday and today, then take off the rest of the week for spring break.
The Green Wave returns home Tuesday for a district doubleheader against Kirk at 4 and 6 p.m.
