South Panola shortstop Chris Townsend was selected as a 2011 Under Armour Pre-Season All-American as a shortstop.
According to a press release, only Division 1 caliber players are considered for selection to this event. Townsend, nephew of former Pittsburgh Steeler and Indianapolis Colts cornerback Deshea Townsend, has been invited and will play in the Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament in Tucson, Ariz. January 14-16.
Players will receive their All-American award at the opening ceremonies. They will then compete in a two-day wood bat tournament at the Kino Sports Complex, former spring training home of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Many professional team scouts are expected to be in attendance and will also instruct players on-field.
This honor is an extension of Townsend’s participation in the Pirate City World Series in Bradenton, Fla. last August.
He is the son of Rev. Christopher and Minister Nyanthia Townsend of Batesville.
