Batesville aldermen are gathering recommendations about where speed bumps should be placed to slow down traffic.
Assistant City Attorney Colmon Mitchell told aldermen that he had received a letter from the Mississippi Attorney General’s office that states the city has the authority to place raised structures on streets. Alderman Ted Stewart during several months’ meetings has requested the speed bumps on behalf of constituents in his ward.
“On Noble, Martinez and Leland, they asked for them,” Stewart said.
Placement prompted among aldermen discussion about speed bump placement, composition and cost. They asked City Engineer Blake Mendrop for his recommendation.
“In residential areas, where there’s a long, through street, normally that’s where they’re speeding,” Alderman Bill Dugger said.
“It doesn’t have to be too long,” Alderman Eddie Nabors said.
“West Street, that’s where we get a lot of complaints about people speeding,” Deputy Police Chief Don Province said.
Hickory Lane and Dogwood Lane were also mentioned during the discussion about speed bump placement.
“I think it needs to come to the board and the board vote on it,” Dugger said. “We don’t need to have one person doing anything,” he added.
