Wednesday’s cooler temperatures allowed longer visiting during the Batesville Farmers’ Market. Fonda Nickle (left) and her dad, Smiley Carothers (right) sold pound cakes, cookies and preserves while they visited (right from Nickle) Betty Waller, Melanie Yelton and Sis Long.

A steady stream of buyers kept Farmers’ Market vendor Charles Cathey busy carrying their Tate County melons to their cars.

Mary O’Connell said that she and a variety of predators compete for the hens and the eggs they lay at her home west of Courtland. She claimed enough of the eggs to bring to Wednesday’s market.

Pete Hicks’ sold tender, young pods of okra at Wednesday’s market. He’s waiting on his next yield of peas — purple hull, pink eye and crowder — which he hopes to be ready for sale in early-to-mid September.

Bobby Rice (left) has sold his preserves, pickles, honey, molasses and other canned delicacies every Wednesday in Batesville. They welcomed Wednesday’s more moderate weather for a change.
