Objects to ever-rising millage, questions priorities in education

This is Tommy Leeton again, who rides down some of the roughest roads in Panola County. Been thinking about putting a sling in my vehicle to prevent my eggs from being scrambled and my whole milk from being churned into butter milk on my way home from the grocery store. Roads are so bad my buddy bearings shook off my boat trailer on the way to the lake the other day. Do you think the county would reimburse me? On many occasions I drive through water after it rains just to get home, yet according to the paper you want to raise millage again because revenue is off? My retirement salary does not go up every year to compensate for cost of living.

I am all for children getting an education, but my taxes should not increase to support sports. I also agree that sports are good for children, but they are recreational not educational. Schools put to much emphasis on sports, especially football. I have to pay for my own recreation. If you want a sports school build it and let the parents of the players support it.

I also disagree with a summer bus route for students who did not pass. That is ridiculous, parents should provide transportation or the child repeats a grade, all after they get their behinds whipped for failing. If children spent less time in extra circular activities and more time in the classroom they might pass required subjects.

Can millage only go up? I do not remember it going down when economic times are good. Panola County is just like Washington anytime they blow their budget they raise taxes. On election day we need to put new people in office. Hopefully with someone who passed math and knows you cannot spend more than you have coming in. Common sense would also be a welcome change.
