Chance Whitten and Jesse Pearson combined on a one-hitter as the Red Sox slipped passed the A’s 3-2 in 13-15 year-old American Legion baseball play Thursday night at American Legion field.
In the first game of the day, Deon Mix blasted a three-run home run in the top of the first to lead the Yankees to a 9-7 victory over the Royals.
Whitten and A’s starting pitcher Will Daugherty locked horns in a pitchers’ duel in the nightcap as both hurlers carried no-hitters into the fourth inning before the Red Sox pushed across three runs in the frame to take a 3-0 lead.
Ironically it was Whitten and Pearson who got the rally started by drawing a pair of walks off Daugherty to start the inning. Cody Harbour then broke open the scoreless game with a triple into right-center to score Whitten and Pearson. Sergio Averado then greeted A’s reliever Ridge Simmerman with a RBI single into left to plate Harbour for the last Yankee run.
The A’s got on the board in top of the fifth as Austin Smith reached on a two-out error and later scored on yet another error to make the score 3-1.
Things got interesting for the Yankees as Pearson walked Colton Cook to lead off in top of the sixth. Simmerman broke up the no-hit bid with a single to left to put runners on first and second. Pearson proceeded to load the bases by walking Bailey Sullivant but then fanned Parker Jones for out number one in the inning.
After Daugherty walked to force in Cook to make the score 3-2, Simmerman was thrown out at home plate attempting to score on a passed ball for the second out. Pearson closed out the game by fanning Scotty Daugherty with the bases loaded to preserve to victory.
Whitten picked up the win by fanning eight over five innings of work while walking two along the way. Will Daugherty suffered the loss on the mound for the A’s by giving up three runs on one hit while striking out six and walking five.
Landon Fullilove, Blake Darby and Cameron Brown all singled for the Yankees in their win over the Royals. Hunter Ivy tripled and doubled to lead the Royals at the plate. Fields Ferguson, Lane Massey, J. C. Harper and Taylor Karr added singles. Harper and Massey pitched three innings each for the Royals while Mix tossed three innings. John Hayden Foster pitched two inning while Darby finished out the game by working the sixth inning.
