Green Wave sweeps West Memphis

Jim Tom Copeland pitched a one-hitter to lead North Delta to a 15-0 win over West Memphis at home Monday.

However, West Memphis left the tying and winning runs on base in the nightcap of the district doubleheader when left fielder Tyler Toole caught the fly ball for the third out.

North Delta (11-6 overall, 3-6 district) won the nightcap 4-3. Ethan Waldrip pitched 6.2 innings for the win. Renic Greenlee relieved Waldrip and pitched starting pitcher and second lead batter Thompson to a fly out for the save.

In the second game, North Delta had a 4-0 lead under Thompson’s pitching.

Mike Anderson took over in the bottom of the third inning and pitched a scoreless four innings and shut down the bats of the Green Wave.

Anderson allowed two hits and walked one, but no runs.

North Delta got its necessary runs in the first two innings.

Bailey Guckert singled in the first inning and worked his way home on a pass ball for the only score of the inning.

Austin Gant got on base by a catcher’s error. Carson Bailey walked. Three straight outs ended the inning.

Ethan Frink tripled to start the bottom of the second inning. Waldrip walked. Both came home on Guckert’s two RBI triple. Then Guckert scored on a Gant sacrifice fly to center field for the 4-0 lead.

Bailey walked and then stole second but was left on base.

West Memphis scored one in the top of the sixth inning and two in the seventh.

Waldrip faced 28 batters, allowed four hits, three earned runs, three walks and had eight strikeouts.

Getting hits for the Green Wave were Guckert, 3-for-4, one double, two runs; Bailey, 1-for-3, two walks; Frink, 1-for-3, one triple, one walk, one run; and Waldrip, 0-for-3, one walk, one run.

In game one, the Green Wave had its way with West Memphis in three innings.

Copeland faced 11 batters, allowed one hit and struck out four. He allowed one walk, which was only his fourth walk this season.

Wesley Sheffer was the starting pitcher for West Memphis and he pitched 2.1 innings. He was relieved in the third by Thompson.

The first inning was scoreless, but North Delta took a 6-0 lead in the second inning. The game was called in the third as the Green Wave scored the needed nine runs without getting its third out.

Hitting and scoring for North Delta were Guckert, 0-for-3, one run; Gant, 2-for-3, two runs, 1 RBI; Copeland, 3-for-3, one double, one run, 2 RBIs; Michael Magee, 1-for-3, one run, 2 RBIs; Ethan Taylor, 2-for-3, one double, two runs, 2 RBIs; Sy Pritchard, 1-for-3,  one hit by pitch, two runs, 1 RBI; Derrick Shawn, 2-for-3, one triple, two runs, 1 RBI; John Cody Dalrymple, 2-for-3, one double, two runs, 4 RBIs; and Frink, 2-for-2, two runs, 1 RBI.

The Green Wave team will finish out the season under interim head coach T.J. Douglas who replaced Stoney Stone.

Stone has entered a  not guilty plea to a March 27 DUI charge.

The Green Wave finished the district series with West Memphis last night. North Delta will close out the season against Kirk Tuesday in a district doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
