Judy Wolfe Curtis

GULPORT— Judy Wolfe Curtis, 55, formerly of Sardis, died Thursday, March 11, 2010.

Graveside services were held at Hazlehurst Cemetery.

Curtis was born in Sardis to Fred and Mary Wolfe and grew up in the Sardis Methodist Church.  After graduating from the University of Mississippi, she went to work in the insurance industry where she served in various capacities.  She and her husband of 30 years, Jim, a Methodist pastor, moved around the state serving many different churches in the Methodist Conference.  She enjoyed spending time reading, traveling, and gardening.  She was a faithful member of the Trinity United Methodist Church Choir in Gulfport.

Survivors include: her brother, Rick Wolfe of Sardis, and his wife Kay, and nieces Amanda and Elizabeth.  

 

Charles William Hanks

DICKSON, Tenn.— Charles William Hanks, 77, died Wednesday, March 17, 2010, at his residence.

Services were Saturday at Wells Funeral Home. Rev. Kelly Mitchell officiated. Burial was in Crowder Cemetery. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Hanks, born Aug. 29, 1932 in Sardis to the late Benny and Lois Appleton Hanks, served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He retired with 36 years of service from MDOT.

Survivors include: his wife, Shelby Mitchell Hanks of Dickson, Tenn.; one son, Richard Massey of Eagleville, Tenn.; one daughter, Donna Massey of Eagleville, Tenn.; one sister, Katie Hanks Whalen of Senatobia; one brother, Benny Hanks Jr. of Senatobia and one grandson, Avery Massey of Eagleville, Tenn.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Izene H. “Pete” Shumaker

KOSCIUSKO— Izene H. “Pete” Shumaker, 86, died Sunday, March 14, 2010, at Montfort Jones Memorial Hospital in Kosciusko. He was the father of Becky Grantham and father in law of Allen Grantham of Batesville.

Graveside services were Wednesday in the Kosciusko City Cemetery. Rev. Don Cook officiated. Jordan Funeral Home had charge.

Shumaker, born Sept. 17, 1923, to William B. and Carrie Shumaker, was a graduate of Zama School and was attending East Central Community College when called in to the service by the United States Marine Corps.

After discharge he worked briefly at the United States Library of Congress and was proud to serve on the Kosciusko Police Department before taking employment at Superior Coach Corporation for several years. After leaving he served the public by running Downtown Gulf Service Station for many years.

He was a charter member of Parkway Baptist Church as well as a deacon and past Sunday School teacher.

Survivors along with his daughter and son-in-law include: his wife of 64 years, Helen Booth Shumaker of Kosciusko; one daughter, Shelia Pumphrey; two sons, Buddy Shumaker and Tim Tyler of Duck Hill and eight grandchildren.
