LeNell Waldrup Dogan

CHARLESTON— LeNell Waldrup Dogan, 87, formerly of Pope, died Thursday December 24, 2009, at her residence. Services will be today at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Charleston. Rev. Don McCain and Rev. Tommy Stevenson will officiate. Wells Funeral Home has charge.

Dogan, born Sept. 9. 1922, in Pope, to the late E.A. and Susan Scruggs Waldrup, served on the building committee at the First United Methodist Church in Charleston, Parsonage Committee and Memorial Committee.

She was a choir member and taught Sunday school. She was active in the business and Professional Women’s Club and held several offices including president of that organization.

She became the first female sheriff in Tallahatchie County history when she took office on January 1, 1964. During her tenure as sheriff she served as secretary-treasurer of the Mississippi Sheriff’s Association. Her husband, persuaded her to run for the sheriff’s office due to a state law, prohibiting a sheriff from succeeding himself, to continue an 83-year tradition of Dogans in the sheriff’s office. He served as her chief deputy after she defeated two male opponents by waging a house to house campaign based on her abilities.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ellett Rice Dogan.

Survivors include: one brother, James Edd Waldrup of Batesville; and one sister, Cornelia DeFrances of Baton Rouge, La.

The family asks memorials be made to First United Methodist Church, 110 West Main Street, Charleston, Miss. 38921.

Frank Hawkins Jr.

COMO— Frank Hawkins Jr., 69, died December 17, 2009, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center.

Services were Saturday at St. Matthew Church in Sardis. Burial was in Senatobia Memorial Cemetery. Felix Cauthen Funeral Home  had charge.

Hawkins was a construction worker.

Survivors include: his wife, Barbara Ann Jackson Hawkins; one daughter, Tiya Jackson of Horn Lake and Cedric Hawkins of Senatobia and eight grandchildren.

George Lamar Lane

GRENADA–George Lamar Lane, 63, died Thursday, December 24, 2009, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.

Services were Sunday at Garner-Harper Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Phillip Bumpers officiated. Burial was in Smith Cemetery at Rosebloom.

He was a retired heavy equipment operator, a U.S. Army Veteran and a member of the Church of the Nazarene.  He was born May 5, 1946, in Tallahatchie County, to George Brewer and Ruby Shook Lane.

He was preceded in death by his father, Brewer Lane.

Survivors include: three daughters, Micki Jones of Batesville, Tracy Moore of Panama City, Fla. and Christy Walters of Grenada; one son, Tony Pullen of Houlka; his mother, Ruby Lane of Grenada; 17 grandchildren, one great-grandchild. 

 

Beatrice Creekmore Morgan

 Beatrice Creekmore Morgan, 96, died Sunday, December 27, 2009, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center.

Services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home. Burial will be in Crowder Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. Wednesday prior to services. Wells Funeral Home has charge.

Morgan, born Feb. 4, 1913, to the late Will and Lula Byrd Creekmore, was a member of Enon Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter “Bill” Morgan.

Survivors include: three daughters, Carolyn Morgan Yacko of Columbiana, Ala., Rita Morgan Pinkston of Anchorage, Alaska and Teresa Morgan Cannon of Batesville; one son, Ricky Donald Morgan of Eugene, Oreg.; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Clarence “Lil Bro” Rudd

BATESVILLE— Clarence “Lil Bro” Rudd, 73, died Thursday, December 24, 2009, at his residence.

Services were Monday at Mt. Gillion M.B. Church in Sardis. Rev. Grady McKinney Jr. officiated. Burial was in Batesville Cemetery. Cooley’s Mortuary had charge.

Rudd, born Oct. 22, 1936, in Sardis, to the late Foster Rudd and Ethel Lee Jones Rudd, was a retired supervisor at Dunlap and Kyle and a member of St. John M.B. Church in Sardis. He was a member of the Panola Lodge 6A.

Survivors include: one daughter, Stella Thomas of Memphis; six sons, Clarence L. Rudd Jr., Joe Willie Rudd, Mack Rudd and Johnny Rudd, all of Batesville, Lee Marvin Rudd of Memphis and Dennis Rudd of Minneapolis, Minn.; three sisters, Mary Rudd Hines, Laura Hamilton and Dorothy Thompson, all of Batesville; six brothers, James Rudd and M.C. Rudd, both of Batesville, Glenn Rudd of Amory, Charles Rudd, Sammie Rudd and Arthur Rudd, all of Memphis; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Doyle R. Scott

CHARLESTON— Doyle R. Scott, 88, died Friday, December 25, 2009, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center.

Services were Sunday at Womble Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Bethel Cemetery near Enid. Womble Funeral Home had charge.

Scott, born March 20, 1921, in Union County, to the late Benjamin Franklin Scott and Lillie Raines Scott, was a World War II Army Veteran and a farmer.

Survivors include: his wife, Eva House Scott; two step-daughters, Angelene Thane of Pensacola, Fla. Lynn Stewart of Enid; one step-son, Ewel Scott of Enid; one brother, Thomas Hall of Enid and three grandchildren.

Wesley Vance Smith

KANSAS CITY, Kan.— Wesley Vance Smith, 53,  formerly of Courtland, died Monday, December 21, 2009, at his residence.

Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Shiloh M.B. Church in Courtland. Rev. John Ellis will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation is Tuesday from 1 p.m. – 6 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.

Smith, born March 24, 1956, to Gerline Smith of Courtland and Henry Bradford of Courtland, was a laborer for Owens Corning in Kansas City.

Survivors along with his mother and father include: one brother, Jimmie Lee Smith of Kansas City; one daughter, Lexis Smith of Kansas City; one step-daughter, Syretta Kelley of Kansas City.
